How The Trump Administration Inserts ‘Blame China’ Propaganda Into Main Stream Media

Throughout the last month there have been a number of reports with headlines like:

All the above and many more hark back to a Washington Post opinion piece by Josh Rogin published on April 14 and headlined:

State Department cables warned of safety issues at Wuhan lab studying bat coronaviruses.

Josh Rogin is a neo-conservative hack who carries water for the Trump administration. That administration has launched a 'blame China' campaign to distract from its failure to contain the epidemic outbreak in the United States. To that purpose they handed Rogin an old diplomatic cable and told him how to 'interpret' it. Rogin dutifully does as he is told.

He begins:

Two years before the novel coronavirus pandemic upended the world, U.S. Embassy officials visited a Chinese research facility in the city of Wuhan several times and sent two official warnings back to Washington about inadequate safety at the lab, which was conducting risky studies on coronaviruses from bats. The cables have fueled discussions inside the U.S. government about whether this or another Wuhan lab was the source of the virus — even though conclusive proof has yet to emerge.

That sets the frame for describing the one cable that was given to Rogin. But when one extracts the facts from his reporting while eliminating the propaganda this picture arises:

  • The Wuhan Institute of Virology has a level 4 bio-security laboratory.
  • The institute is known for research on coronaviruses that occur in bats from south China.
  • Some of the research was done in collaboration with two U.S. universities and financed by the U.S. government.
  • The laboratory had asked to receive additional U.S. support for further studies.
  • The January 2018 the U.S. embassy in China sends two diplomats to visit the laboratory. Neither of them is an expert for laboratory safety or virology.
  • The diplomats are told that research on bat derived coronaviruses is important as such viruses, like SARS, can threaten humans.
  • They are told by the Chinese researchers that more work could be done if the laboratory had more trained technicians.
  • The diplomats travel back to their embassy. They write a cable using the researchers' arguments to recommend that additional U.S. support should be granted to the laboratory.
  • No additional funds are granted.

When described as above the story is one that occurs in publicly financed research institutions day in and out. Everyone research institution is always looking for new grants. It communicates with possible grant givers and emphasizes the necessity of its research and the need for further support.

But Rogin constructs a rather wild picture from those facts:

What the U.S. officials learned during their visits concerned them so much that they dispatched two diplomatic cables categorized as Sensitive But Unclassified back to Washington. The cables warned about safety and management weaknesses at the WIV lab and proposed more attention and help. The first cable, which I obtained, also warns that the lab’s work on bat coronaviruses and their potential human transmission represented a risk of a new SARS-like pandemic.

“During interactions with scientists at the WIV laboratory, they noted the new lab has a serious shortage of appropriately trained technicians and investigators needed to safely operate this high-containment laboratory,” states the Jan. 19, 2018, cable, which was drafted by two officials from the embassy’s environment, science and health sections who met with the WIV scientists.

A real warning about safety issues at the lab would certainly be classified. What Rogin describes as "warning about safety" is a warning of a new SARS like pandemic. The "management weakness" is the desire to get the U.S. to finance more personnel at the laboratory. Rogin admits as much in his next paragraph:

The Chinese researchers at WIV were receiving assistance from the Galveston National Laboratory at the University of Texas Medical Branch and other U.S. organizations, but the Chinese requested additional help. The cables argued that the United States should give the Wuhan lab further support, mainly because its research on bat coronaviruses was important but also dangerous.

Rogin then introduces an additional scare factor by lamenting about 'gain of function' research on viruses. Such research attempts to manipulate viruses to give them additional features. He is trying to associate the Wuhan lab with such type of research:

As the cable noted, the U.S. visitors met with Shi Zhengli, the head of the research project, who had been publishing studies related to bat coronaviruses for many years. In November 2017, just before the U.S. officials’ visit, Shi’s team had published research showing that horseshoe bats they had collected from a cave in Yunnan province were very likely from the same bat population that spawned the SARS coronavirus in 2003.

The research was designed to prevent the next SARS-like pandemic by anticipating how it might emerge. But even in 2015, other scientists questioned whether Shi’s team was taking unnecessary risks. In October 2014, the U.S. government had imposed a moratorium on funding of any research that makes a virus more deadly or contagious, known as “gain-of-function” experiments.

The link Rogin provides goes to a Nature piece on a debate about a certain 'gain of function' research. The research in question was experiments at University of North Carolina, not in Wuhan. The paper describing that research, A SARS-like cluster of circulating bat coronaviruses shows potential for human emergence, was written by Professor Ralph S. Baric who had also designed the experiment. The paper lists a total of fifteen collaborators. One of the listed authors is indeed Zhengli-Li Shi who leads the laboratory in Wuhan.

But neither Zhengli-Li Shi, nor her laboratory, were actually involved in any of the experiments. At the and of the research paper the contributions of each co-author are listed. About Zhengli-Li Shi it says:

Z.-L.S. provided SHC014 spike sequences and plasmids.

The Wuhan laboratory only provided specific gene sequences from its pool of bat viruses, the laboratory's and Zhengi-Li Shi's specialty, that the researchers in North Carolina wanted to use in their experiment.

To construe that furnisher function as involvement in 'gain of function' experiments is a unjustified exaggeration. I have found no evidence that the Wuhan lab itself ever engaged in such research.

Rogin concludes his scare piece by handing the microphone to the demagogue in the White House that is his source:

Inside the Trump administration, many national security officials have long suspected either the WIV or the Wuhan Center for Disease Control and Prevention lab was the source of the novel coronavirus outbreak. According to the New York Times, the intelligence community has provided no evidence to confirm this. But one senior administration official told me that the cables provide one more piece of evidence to support the possibility that the pandemic is the result of a lab accident in Wuhan.

“The idea that it was just a totally natural occurrence is circumstantial. The evidence it leaked from the lab is circumstantial. Right now, the ledger on the side of it leaking from the lab is packed with bullet points and there’s almost nothing on the other side,” the official said.

Manipulated interpretations of diplomatic cables and evidence-free claims about allegedly existing evidence were also used in warmongering campaigns about weapons of mass destruction in Iraq and chemical attacks in Syria. The neo-conservatives are now using the same old tricks against China.

The media echo shows that they have some success with this.

I rarely write this–Obama was the culmination of the CIA’s plans for complete control of all phases on the Executive, even more so than when DCI GHW Bush was in charge for 12 years, followed by another of their moles Clinton, then absolute puppet, GW Bush and minder Cheney. Trump’s threat to drain the swamp resonated with many; and that along with other economic reasons allowed him to win despite all the rigging. But where does he visit first after his inauguration–CIA HQ–the enemy’s den. Much remains hidden. But would Trump have a Do Nothing Policy if he thought COVID-19 would threaten his reelection? And he continues to make big mistakes. I don’t believe anyone forced Trump to say the pandemic was a “hoax”; I see him sabotaging himself. Or was he told the virus posed no threat by someone he trusted more than anyone and thus his policy and behavior? (The policy was clearly in place at the beginning of 2020 based on Rick Bright’s whistleblowing testimony.) Recall my initial hypothesis saying China’s crying Wolf put a spanner into the works; now look at the offensive aimed at China with Russia being added for good measure since the two have said they’ll now deal with the Outlaw US Empire as a team. There’re many threads to untangle and recent history to reexamine as we try to get at the Truth. I know many hold that the virus is natural; but what if some bright microbiologist developed a procedure that masked any such meddling, and thus the virus is manufactured for use as a bioweapon? IMO, that possibility can’t be ruled out given all the other facts and behaviors known and observed. If we now had Clinton instead of Trump, would we have COVID-19?

“..But if it did happen, Trump would be guaranteed a win, even after such a monumental failure in handling Covid-19.” BM@100
Consider the possibility that neither Biden nor Trump, neither one of the two old and thoroughly discredit parties, wins the election. It would take an incredible amount of self betrayal, particularly in this time of real crisis, for any of the Sanders supporters(excepting always the minority of whores looking for career advances) to go out and vote for Biden who represents not only everything wrong with the Democrats but is the selected tool of the forces which conspired to cheat in the primaries and steal the nomination.
The ground for a Third Party candidate is very fertile, if the Greens nominate the right sort of standard bearer and adopt the policies that Sanders promoted, plus a robust anti imperialist plank, the prospects of breaking the duopoly would be very good. One way or another it is hard to find a Presidential contest with two less electable (in the current atmosphere) candidates than the turkeys on offer.
It may be unlikely, given the contrived anti democratic effect of the Electoral College, for a Third party candidate to win but it would be an important victory just to transfer the decision to the House of Representatives.

At this point, this is essentially a “dead letter”: with this pandemic triggered crisis, it is simply not profitable to invest in infrastructure in the USA anymore, so those new 5G investment wouldn’t happen either way.

Thanks for the responses and the additional links on the mechanism of entry of the COVID-19 virus. This virus is also reported to bind to CD147 receptor sites but I have not gotten around to tracking this down.
See also how the virus induces clotting via destruction of the capillary cell walls releasing Van Willebrand factors as described in MEDCRAM 69.

Thanks for your reply, but I wouldn’t put Fauci forward as Trump’s trusted confidant, although he was clearly part of the Do Nothing Policy until it blew up; he’s clearly in CYA mode looking at his future with a big black mark on his integrity. I guess it was a stroke of good fortune that GW Bush was confronted by a mere hurricane, not a pandemic.

“Blaming China” – Russia just stepped in. LINK

Moscow considers US accusations against China regarding the spread of the coronavirus to be groundless and destructive, Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov has announced.
“We are naturally watching the accusations being made by Washington against the PRC, our strategic partner, with concern and anxiety,” Ryabkov said, speaking at the Valdai discussion club’s online seminar ‘Staying Sane in a Crumbling World’ on Thursday.
“We have repeatedly stated our position on this issue, and it boils down to the fact that there are no reasons to blame China for doing anything that was untimely, wrong or inadequate during the entire period of its fight with the COVID-19 virus,” he added.

Notice he used the appellation “strategic partner”? Not for nothing that.

Good catch. However, if cooperation on 5G is off, that’s quite a U turn. It is not just buying and selling equipment. U.S. will not be at the table. Only 6 days ago:

Exclusive: U.S. drafts rule to allow Huawei and U.S. firms to work together on 5G standards – sources

(Reuters) – The U.S. Department of Commerce is close to signing off on a new rule that would allow U.S. companies to work with China’s Huawei Technologies on setting standards for next generation 5G networks, people familiar with the matter said.
Engineers in some U.S. technology companies stopped engaging with Huawei to develop standards after the Commerce Department blacklisted the company last year. The listing left companies uncertain about what technology and information their employees could share with Huawei, the world’s largest telecommunications equipment maker.
That has put the United States at a disadvantage, said industry and government officials.. In standards setting meetings, where protocols and technical specifications are developed that allow equipment from different companies to function together smoothly, Huawei gained a stronger voice as U.S. engineers sat back in silence. (emphasis added)

Trump is really dense. It’s all about his base and November 3rd.
Guess it’s more a priority to be disadvantaged. Racing to 3rd world status. Cut nose, spite face.

‘As late as mid February Fauci said on camera that the evil virus was less of a threat than the seasonal influenza’
Interesting to put that together with this from Rolling Stone:
https://www.rollingstone.com/politics/politics-features/covid-19-test-trump-admin-failed-disaster-995930/
“On March 6th, at the CDC headquarters in Atlanta, Redfield again stood by the president’s side. “I want to thank you for your decisive leadership, in helping us put public health first,” he told Trump, who wore a red keep america great cap. Redfield again called the risk from the coronavirus “low” and insisted the U.S. had only an “isolated number of clusters.” He then made a claim that would be comical if it were not so tragic: “It’s not as if we have multiple, multiple — hundreds and hundreds of clusters” across the country. “I mean, we’re not blind where this virus is right now in the United States.” The next day, appearing with Pence and cruise-industry executives, Redfield encouraged American travelers to keep their reservations, and even to visit Disneyland. Within the week, the administration’s denial crashed into the reality of the exploding pandemic. Disney shut its parks; Trump declared a state of emergency. Finally, on March 16th, the administration rolled out social-distancing guidelines to “slow the spread,” and the nation’s economy started grinding to a halt.”
————
It seems like the ‘O shit!’ moment came sometime between March 6 and March 16
————-
The important thing now is to deal with the problem at hand but I think it is useful to discuss the origin to better understand the response.
The use as a bioweapon to up the ante in the trade war was in character (consider Libya, Syria, Yemen).
Coronaviruses such as SARS were thought to be regional problems and not pandemic in nature like influenza
China recognized it for what it was and took extreme measures.
The US got unexpected blowback from this enhanced virus.  Think dual use and gain of function and essentially became scared shitless.
I don’t think the lockdowns and economic meltdown were planned.
But of course the response is typical, witness the direction of the bailouts.

It does seem possible that major players didn’t want to think/admit that their gain of function studies caused a major problem until it became undeniable.
Once things started getting more under control, it doesn’t seem unreasonable in the current environment that anti Trump factions would want to continue the economic mayhem until election.
Even the Fed, somewhat similar to 2008 actually, is asking Congress to task them with creating money for Main Street.

Thanks to Karlof1 for the re-posting of that link:COVID-19 Pandemic
before discarding it, I suggest all to read it and evaluate; after a superficial look the bloke does not seem to me a charlatan; and he certainly does not shy from his opinions, openly accusing the USA of having engineered it as a weapon.
But I am almost totally ignorant of biology, chemistry, and medicine, certainly at least at the level professor Law seems familiar to be.
So if there are some people who have a decent knowledge of the matters, they can maybe offer a serious, balanced, impartial evaluation of that paper, to me it looks like a very important document, and while not an official position from the Chinese government, it can be seen as a warning, a first firm step pointing at incriminating the usual alphabet USA agencies, those that are accustomed to such evil aggressions from the very inception of the USA.
Certainly such a covert, reckless, homicidal aggression is not at all out of character for the USA military establishment: it perfectly matches a long line of previous foolish, criminal acts of war.
Professor Law openly says that with that paper he establish beyond any reasonable doubt how the virus is the product of a precise will to inflict harm.
Can he be debunked?
Because if he can’t, well, I advise the US government to take a pause, hopefully a step back, and have a deep, long look at what it’s doing, and the actions it’s carrying out on the global scene, and hopefully refrain form pushing too hard; truly, stop keep doing what it’s doing, and change course, before it’s too late.
Sadly I see B has deleted Karlof1 post. I guess he has valid reasons to do that; but I have a feeling they are depressing reasons. And probably this post will have same end; still, I hope not.

SARS-CoV-2 mechanism of entry into cells much more complex than just ACE-2 receptor binding. Here is a depressing video by Dr Paul Cottrell that explains ACE-2, CD147 and GRP78 receptors and the function of furan in the infection.

My initial postings about that paper still exist where I posted them a week ago. There’s no settled agreement about the virus’s origin. The Nature report cited as proof of its being natural is being challenged. I just put forth the hypothesis that the original nature of any GMO might now be possible to mask. We know the “Began in China” timeline is now complete fiction. We know the Outlaw US Empire denied the Italian government permission to exhume the bodies of its nationals to see if they died from the virus during Summer of 2019–why the denial if nothing to hide? And today, Trump’s declared “insane” by for his threat to completely cut ties with China. Also today, whistleblower Rick Bright testified before Congress about what appears to be a Treasonous policy of Do Nothing instituted by Trump at the start of 2020. So, there’s a massive CYA movement on by numerous actors.
Clearly, numerous things aren’t correct and both the Executive and Congress require citizen oversight that some are doing yet many more need to do–we need a million Iggy Stones–and the EU needs to be put into the fire too by its peoples as Do Nothing was more than the Empire’s policy choice. Another institution that needs to be infiltrated by irate citizens is the Fraudulent Fed. But that’s a topic for another thread.

The information war against China is off the charts. The Neocons know that the road to Tehran is through Beijing. Actually, that is lunacy but they realize that Iran will definitely not collapse as long as there is a China.

I would slightly alter that to read:
Actually, that is lunacy but they realize that Iran will definitely not collapse as long as there is a(n) China Iran.
What’s that quote over the entrance of the foreign ministry? Neither West, nor East.
For over 40 years every trick in the book has been tried to bring an end to IRI, to no avail.
Karim Sharara explains it better than I could.

So Iran’s going through its worst year and is hiding the true numbers of Coronavirus victims? It seems it’s also been digging mass graves because it can’t handle the increasing number of deaths, and people are collapsing on the street left and right because of the COVID-19 outbreak.
Not only that but apparently the evil Iranian regime will (as predicted by the most knowledgeable of pundits, as always), collapse due to the outbreak; just as it collapsed during and after the 8-year war with Iraq, again once the reformists won the 1997 elections, then again in 2009, not to mention 2011 after the Arab spring, and most recently in both 2017-2018.
Either the Islamic Republic is a cat or these “experts” are purposely spreading misinformation.

I’ve written an article based on the Global Times item asking if Trump’s “insane” to threaten the complete cutting of relations with China. Those others seem to be alternative binding targets in addition to ACE2 – more ways for the virus to attach to cell surface.

GRP78 … similar story, although this one was predicted computationally? GRP78 is also an alternative binding target for MERS and some others.

An explanation of why the “herd immunity” idiots don’t know what they are talking about…
Everything You Need to Know About Herd Immunity
It’s the ultimate goal, but attaining it can be difficult (and deadly)
https://tinyurl.com/y772bqoj

With a current U.S. population of around 330 million people, a 60% infection rate is about 198 million people. Using the low estimate of a 0.5% death rate, nearly a million people will die (for context, as of May 13, the official death toll was just over 80,000). If the fatality rate is closer to 3%, nearly 6 million will die.
And that’s just when the brake is pulled, when infections *start* to taper down. Reaching 80% means 1.3 to 7.9 million dead Americans — with no guarantee transmission will stop.

I totally agree Obama was the peak of CIA’s plans for complete control of all phases on the Executive, nothing could be more clear (though the order of the hierarchy “woke” oligarchs – Obama/CIA – executive could be argued both ways. But in terms of looking beyond Obama the structure was without question a Mafia-CIA-based structure rather than a president-based structure, with the intention that the CIA and their oligarch/mafia leaders select future presidents on a permanent basis. No wonder the cabal were so desperate to block Trump, both because so much was at stake but especially out of fear of hanging for treason. Every single one of the cabal from top to bottom had very serious crimes to protect themselves from.
Obviously if Trump thought his ignoring Covid-19 policy was an election loser from the start he would have done otherwise. He misjudged, and pays the price. Most probably yes, he trusted someone’s bad opinion too much, yes, that could very well be Jared, and yes, that was very probably influenced by CIA biological warfare activities, although I am slightly more inclined to assume he was not privy until later. Rick Bright’s whistleblowing does show a definite policy, but that was fairly clear anyway at the time. The testing policy was also fairly clear at that time – delay all test availability as long as possible, make sure Covid carriers enter the USA without testing, without tracing, and without quarantining, and make sure that a good strong infection is thoroughly started. That much, I think, is clear. The reasons are not, and may also vary according to agent. Two possibilities seem to present themselves: (a) because they thought the infection was trivial, just like a flu (my preferred view in Trump’s case – simply because I don’t think it is likely he was privy to what was really going on); (b) because – like 911 – they salivated at using the opportunity of a severe lockdown to completely (and permanently) finish off what they started with 911, to achieve full and irrevocable Big Brother control. For this, it would be necessary that the infection first widely spread and take thorough hold, thus it agrees well with the observed behaviour. (Actually, I think the first main stage was not 911 but its precursor, the Omagh massacre in the UK in 1998, which used similar psychology to achieve similar but more limited legal results. These two events together were clearly planned as initiating the final takedown of the (sham) “Democracy” show. 911 was, I suspect, intended to take place as a turn of the Millenium event, but one of the prime “bombers” was accidentally arrested by overzealous and unknowing Canadians while trying to cross the border. I was expecting such a Millenium “event” at the time. The Omagh massacre had many features in common with 911, including the active participation of MI5 through infiltrators, advance preparation of the “emergency” security laws, and a common psychological basis etc.)
I also agree with you about China crying wolf putting a spanner in the works. Here there are two possibilities:
(a) the virus was meant to be much more serious, but, as I commented once, was like a missile that fizzelled out on impact instead of exploding – the Chinese stated that there were two initial strains in Wuhan T and S, T was initially far more common and far more serious, but within a week type S quickly took over and T became very rare. The virus had mutated to become less fatal, although it was still highly transmissible and still had the crucial two stages of infection. According to this scenario, the implanted T-strain (i.e. without the unplanned mutation to the S-strain) was expected to overwhelm China’s ability to control it, breaking their economy and permanently cutting off their rise to preeminence. The two-stage infection plus large degree of asymptomacy was to ensure* that the infection could widely spread despite the high mortality amongst the sick and elderly. *It could be it was nevertheless not as infectious as intended and was slower to take off than expected – hence the anxious US forecasts of rapidly spreading infections in November; perhaps there may also have been other simultaneous infections that completely failed to spread – I read there was one isolated case somewhere else in China that seemed to be a different strain. Also what appear to be early infections in the US suspected to have leaked from Fort Detrick did not seem to spread so quickly or effectively.
(b) The second scenario is that it was never expected by the US to be a particularly serious disease, much like a bad flu, but enough to cause an expensive and damaging disruption to China. By appearing to be much like a bad flu, and being related to bat viruses, the US hoped for plausible deniability. So some extent scenarios (a) and (b) converge, in that the US elite are happy to laugh off a disease that primarily kills off the elderly, the sick and the poor.
So why did the Chinese react so strongly? Were they crying Wolf? Both yes and no, I think. Firstly they did not know the characteristics of Covid initially, so they had to assume the worst. Secondly the elderly, sick and poor are very important to China, unlike the US. Thirdly I believe they knew or suspected from an early stage that this was a biological attack; psychologically that is intrinsically different to a natural attack and infinitely more threatening, even in a hypothetical case of a very mild attack – it is unnatural, man-made, evil, immoral … and it is outright warfare. Fourthly as a novel and unstable man-made virus (or also otherwise!) it can and will mutate at any time, and such mutation may be either more or less potent. Fifthly, in view of the two stages of infection observed in this previously unknown disease, what if the diseases hides other nasty surprises such as a later third stage? For example, what if the initially mild cases initially recover, then later suddenly recur and become fatal. Such questions cannot be known by the Chinese until the virus has been studied thoroughly over an extended period of time.
Thus, without question, China had highly compelling reasons to react strongly. The fact that the virus is (in my view at least) man-made is good reason to try their very best to try to eliminate it totally from the planet. Such a Frankenstein should not be allowed to exist.
But in addition to such compelling reasons for reacting in the strong way they did, it was also an excellent and absolutely vital way to test their epidemic preparedness as a practice for when the US – almost inevitably – release a far more deadly biological attack on China. WOW! What a perfect opportunity to test their meticulously planned protocols with a real live virus, but one which is not so deadly as SARS-1 or Ebola, for example. One day the US may release a virus more deadly than Ebola and more infectious than Covid-19. The “practice live drill” China has carried out nationwide has almost certainly saved many thousands of lives – perhaps many millions of lives – that would otherwise have been lost in a subsequent US attack without the important lessons from Covid-19.
China has experienced so many epidemics in the last decade affecting both citizens and livestock and even crops, and whilst nothing can be proven, the coincidences are certainly suggestive. Combined with the proven history of US use of biological and chemical warfare, their known takeover of Japanese Unit 731 – both of which have previously used biological warfare against China, their known takeover of Nazi biological weapons experts, their known extensive research into offensive biological weapons, and their known extensive strings of offensive biological weapons laboratories circling Russia and China, the threat to China is of utmost importance and priority. The response in China must of necessity be a response of full military-level defence against biological warfare – i.e. at life-or-death level – even if the virus (in its current form) might be relatively less dangerous to the extent that Trump and Boris Johnson consider it a laughing matter, even in their own countries.
In this latter sense China might be viewed as crying “Wolf” relative to the expectations of the US and the UK. But at the same time I am sure they were well aware that by almost totally eradicating the virus from China after the US and UK tried to ridicule their efforts, they seriously put a strategic spanner in the works for the US and the UK, creating a serious dilemma for them. The plan was that the virus would somewhat ravage China without being effectively contained, but remain largely within Asia. If it then also spread to the US and UK, well they place no value on the elderly, infirm or poor, so politically they think they can just ignore it, “take it on the chin”. The problem (for US/UK) comes when China takes it so seriously and goes to such extreme lengths to eradicate it, that sends a firm message to citizens of the West that completely pulls the rug from under them and invalidates their entire strategy. Finally they are forced to switch to the opposite extreme – completely unprepared – and force savage and illogical lockdowns that are really more suicide pacts because the damage to the health of those so brutally locked down is far worse than that due to the virus itself (well, there is disagreement on this at MoA but the overall argument remains).
End result – China pulls out quickly and its economy recovers quickly, it is able to restore production quickly, hence it can quickly and profitably produce what is urgently needed in the paralysed West, and it gains in long-term prestige, stability and wealth. Win-win is the hands-down winner, zero-sum loses all.
As for “what if some bright microbiologist developed a procedure that masked any such meddling“, well, that has surely been done already! Namely, selecting specifically for mutations in the desired changes, and running successive generations of virus repeatedly through successive crops of animal hosts until the desired phenotypes are manifested. It is a sort of human-guided selection. It is far faster than natural selection in the wild, and much harder to prove as “man-made” than direct genetic engineering. If I remember correctly, the detailed comments by Oldmicrobiologist at Saker/Unz describe such an approach and hints that it may have been adopted here (from memory though, it may have been somewhere else).
(Sorry this was rather long!)

The Chinese Perspective
Two really well researched & written Global Times’ articles about economic tensions & escalations and how to counter it.
What’s at stake for Australia to be US’ attack dog?
By GT staff reporters Source:Global Times Published: 2020/5/15 18:48:40
Australia has $153.2 billion reasons not to pick a fight with China, its biggest trade partner. However, the country has emerged as one of the most loyal US attack dogs in a seemingly all-out campaign against China over the fallout of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Insider reveals details on China’s plan to target US tech giants to retaliate against Huawei ban
By GT staff reporters Source:Global Times Published: 2020/5/15 20:07:49
China is ready to take a series of countermeasures against a US plan to block shipments of semiconductors to Chinese telecom firm Huawei, including putting US companies on an “unreliable entity list,” launching investigations and imposing restrictions on US companies such as Apple, and halting purchase of Boeing airplanes, a source close to the Chinese government told the Global Times.
Notice
Huawei’s flagship Mate 30 5G phone now has only 1% U.S. content. Surprisingly, the $34 OLED screen from Samsung cost more that the $32 HiSilicon processing chip and is the most expensive major component.
And increase in Korean and Japanese semiconductor parts too, considering they are the actually competitors to US semiconductor players.

BM @123–
Thanks for your outstanding reply!!! Although seemingly unrelated, the botched CIA “invasion” of Venezuela prompted this article based around Prouty’s Secret Team where some parallels can be seen with the COVID-19 op. Admittedly, the author gets somewhat sloppy in the last third of his essay, but the main points made prevail. Bright’s testimony yesterday was quite damaging, IMO, as he made the major point that Trump’s regime still doesn’t have any sort of plan to deal with the problem–even the committee’s GOP pukes didn’t attempt to challenge him on that point.
Altogether, IMO our scenario is most probable as the observed behavior’s quite damning. What’s most important of course is what the Chinese and Russians believe occurred. China’s response to the smear attempts are fast, demonstrative, witty, biting, and–as Escobar points out at his FB–done in close to real time. The famous Chinese deference and tact are gone and we now have what I call Media Boxing, at which the Chinese are proving quite good. We also must consider that the entire world’s watching; and in the most crucial part of that world–the ASEAN bloc–China’s cred is rising while the Outlaw US Empire’s continues to head toward the basement. In the article I wrote for my VK space, I noted the key stat provided by Global Times regarding the comparative size of the trade volumes and markets in play if Trump were to sever all relations:
“‘If the US unilaterally cuts off ties, the American people will pay a heavier price than us, because China’s domestic market is huge and 75-80 percent of Chinese manufacturers are supplying China’s market, and the 2 to 5 percent that supply the US can also be absorbed by the domestic market,’ he noted.”
IMO, Trump’s already lost; in fact, he never even had a chance. There’s no way all the geoeconomic vitality lost since 1982 was going to be suddenly regained, not while giving Wall Street Trillions. Now he’s painted himself into a corner. China’s ready and more than able. Today’s Global Times editorial lays out the general plan, which isn’t defensive:
“China must display its strategic demeanor as a major power. We need to set up the ability and mentality to tangle with the world, during which process China’s historical culture can endow us with inspiration.
“We must be clear that coping with US suppression will be the key focus of China’s national strategy. We should enhance cooperation with most countries. The US is expected to contain China’s international frontlines, and we must knock out this US plot and make China-US rivalry a process of US self-isolation.
“China should take measures to dilute ideological clashes with the West. Values are the cheapest tool with which the US rallies its Western allies to suppress China. Every country has the right to walk its own path. China’s path has benefited its people and does not hurt the interests of Western countries. There is a basis for China and the West to respect each other and co-exist peacefully.
“Within China, we should make great efforts to create mechanisms and environments favorable to scientific and technological innovation. Meanwhile, we should prevent our struggles with the US from exerting a negative impact on our social governance. Struggles with the US require internal unity.
“That the US suppresses China in full fury goes against trends. As long as we do our job well, there is no need to fear Washington’s thirst for power. If the US really walks beyond the lines, we will first make some US companies suffer to show our strength and resolve. Then we will think how to cope with all these changes and adopt a down-to-earth manner to engage in a prolonged struggle with a reckless US.”
IMO, Open War is a major danger given events in South China Sea and Taiwan as China’s not going to back down and be humiliated as it was in the 19th Century. And that would be far worse for the Outlaw US Empire.

Posted by: karlof1 | May 15 2020 17:01 utc | 125

After writing about the utterly criminal nature of the government of the Outlaw US Empire, I finally got around to reading Caitlin Johnstone’s short explanation as to why all of our efforts will fall short unless we follow our own and her advice:
“If we want real change, it cannot and will not come from either of the two mainstream political factions whose primary job is preventing real change. It’s going to have to come from the people; we’re going to have to find a way to punch through the propaganda brainwashing, wake up to reality, and use the power of our numbers to force the changes which will benefit us past all the oligarchic safeguards that have been placed in front of us to prevent us from doing so.”
I see no reason to continue flogging a dead horse. I’ve contributed the best that I can given my circumstances, so I think I’ll retire from being active and lurk since there’re plenty of barflies willing to continue barking.

@126 karlof1
I think you will enjoy lurking. It’s a more peaceful life. It offers time for the larger concepts that become required once one accepts the logic of Caitlin’s manifesto that you linked to.
I trust you will drop an analysis from time to time, and maybe some links. I will continue to come here and look for your name among the commenters I choose to click on. I always read b but the threads are an additional overhead that I can’t pay at present.
It seems that there’s just no time for debate on the micro elements. The macro package has to be formed.
The way forward is the classical way forward. Politically, it takes a movement of people united in solidarity, and it takes a manifesto for the country and the future. Personally, I think the US Constitution is the only hope the people of the US have – it is the one mythic rallying point in the culture, and actually would make a decent enough society.
Apart from this, if any change were to start simply from basic principles, then I suppose it goes the way of any banana republic and erupts into real revolution. But that would take some years to get to, for the nation to deteriorate into such a stark battleground. I would hate to think of the mess getting to that point, let alone the mess getting past it.
And I note that many of the revolutionary states are still struggling to achieve their aims. The struggle takes many decades in all, I think, in any of the scenarios. Personally, I think the US belongs to the Millennials, and they will have to create a new society. Ramin Mazaheri noted recently that they will be crazy if, after the final nail of the virus in their coffin, they don’t choose outright socialism.
At any rate, I came to see the struggle as a longer one than one might wish for. It seemed more useful to study the deeper tomes, the successful revolutionaries who have gone before and left thriving socialist societies. And perhaps to leave to the younger generations some part of an intellectual legacy to draw on. All revolutions seem to have their fighters of the time and also their philosophical antecedents that the fighters can draw on.
And it seems to me that your talents would be admirably employed in such a pursuit, with such a timescale in mind.
Be well.

Thanks for your fine words. Our thoughts are similar. I’ve a mountain of reading and several writing projects to attempt. And I’ve taken to writing more at my VK space. 2020 became a far different year than anyone could’ve imagined 5.5 months ago. I’m sure you’ll read Pepe’s latest about “Biosecurity.” Our state’s beginning to reopen, and that means tourists from all will be bringing their bugs, so we’ll remain masked for awhile.
Ciao!

I want to add my voice to those who praise your writing. I always read your comments and would miss them should you become a full time lurker. I lurk because I really have nothing new to say..most everything has already been written and we are doomed to never learn from the past.
I don’t believe there can ever be any significant change in the way things work until everyone takes an interest in their own communities and neighborhoods. We need to start there, not at the state or federal level. Start by paying attention to who runs the local political parties…maybe get into them to affect changed from within. Get honest and sincere people to do work in their elected positions and make them issue reports on progress. Pay them a good wage so they are not tempted by bribes.
the very rich are powerful, focused, experienced, and in a very good position as most of us envy them and don’t want to really ruin our own possibilities should we find ourselves with a nice stack one day. You can’t take them head-on. you won’t be able to convince the talking heads on corporate media to actually report the news because that would be the end of their jobs and some other sycophant is waiting in the wings. The police are usually with them as well but that is probably because we don’t do a good job of choosing them and allowing them to set up their own crime families. We could very well have Sheriffs like Andy of Mayberry or Matt Dillon…why not? Instead we have mobsters who kill with impunity and are revered by the corporate media. There may very well be some who are good people but those are not in positions of power.
someone else wrote that you can go into a bar in the US and find out many facts and trivia about sports teams, well researched details and statistics as well as fairly accurate predictions of who will win and who will not. Yet in that same bar you would be hard pressed to find someone who knows the names of their state senators, district representative, supreme court judge, and even their local council person. That has to change.
again, not my idea but one I read here, we must think globally and act locally.

COVID-19 is America’s Chernobyl Moment.
Indeed, it is America’s and Europe’s Chernobyl Moment, as both of these malignant entities have failed what Martin Sieff calls, the Audit of Pandemic.
The United States and the European Union Have Failed the Audit of Pandemic
https://www.strategic-culture.org/news/2020/04/09/united-states-and-european-union-have-failed-audit-of-pandemic/
Americans in particular–with their in-bred delusions of American Supremacy–cannot stand to face that reality.
So they do what Americans do best.
Avoid looking in the mirror.
Look for a scapegoat.
Push a propaganda campaign of lies and blood libels against China.
And, most pathetic of all, America wallows in an orgy of Self-Pity, where it blames China for the USA’s own massive failures.
At base, Americans simply don’t have the balls, nor the honesty, nor the courage to face the hard truth that their criminally Laissez-Faire response to the COVID-19 pandemic is only a symptom of the moral bankruptcy of America as a nation and as a people.
Quoting Megan Amram, Caitlin Johnstone bluntly explains this situation:

Your link ro VK works perfectly well in Europe…That must be a feature of the US….
Good luck!
As I read part of your conversation here with BM, may be you could find interesting ( amy be it tells you something…) that the far-right in Spain ( the party of former president Aznar, the infamous of the Trio of Azores who started the War on Iraq ) has stated they will not support any more extension of state of alarm proposed by the central government, and have proposed a “plan” to restart economy which includes digital certificate of healthy state and passport.
It was about this, no wonder they created such chaos in Madrid community which they manage…
The control of the pandemic can not be made because Fascist International boicots it whenever it has the ocassion….

By now, anyone with a brain larger than a sesame seed understands that everything Trump says is either incorrect, utterly stupid, or obnoxious. He is never correct on anything ever. Because Trump is stupid, he hires only toadies and butt boys that are even dumber than the pig POTUS himself. It is no wonder that the rest of planet either shakes their head at the USA or laughs themselves silly about how the country is so disfunctional. Putin certainly does both.
