Syria – Another Ceasefire In Idleb – Erdogan Loses On All Points

Our last post on Syria concluded:

Erdogan wants Idleb but neither Syria nor Iran nor Russia will let him have it. President Putin will meet Erdogan during the coming days and will make sure that the point is understood.

President Tayyip Erdogan of Turkey and President Vladimir Putin of Russia met today in Moscow. They had a 160 minute long talk under 4 eyes and another round with their relevant staff. The parties agreed on a new ceasefire in Idleb governorate.

The so far published agreed points are:

1- Cease all military actions along the line of contact in the Idlib de-escalation area starting 00:01 on March 6, 2020

2- A security corridor will be established 6 km deep to the north and the south from highway M4, Specific parameters of the functioning of the security corridor will be agreed between the Defense Ministries of the Turkish Republic and the Russian Federation within 7 days.

3- On March 15, 2020 joint Turkish-Russian patrolling will begin along highway M4 from the settlement oo Trumba (2 km to the west of Saraqib) to the settlement of Ain-Al-Hayr.

Here are part one and two of the memo.

(I believe that Ain-Al-Hayr is also transliterated as Ain al Hawr which is on the very western end of the M4 segment that is still under Jihadi control).

The aim of the current Syrian army operation is thereby largely fulfilled. The M4 and the M5 highways will be free of Jihadis and open to traffic.

This ceasefire is unlikely to hold over a longer period. But it brings a useful pause for the Syrian army that will allow it to recover a bit and to take care of its men and equipment.

This for now also ends the Turkish threat to attack the Syrian army and to reconquer all areas it had liberated over the last months.

Erdogan, who had made many demands, saw none of them fulfilled. The agreement will cost him political points within his party.

Best thing for me from the Moscow meeting between Erdogan and Putin was the subservient stature of the Turkish delegation in front of Putin and standing under the statue of Catherine the Great who defeated the Turks several times during the XVIII century.

not that i think it’s particularly relevant, but to once again counter your very assertive presumptuousness, i live in a fairly modest apartment in a hilltop town in central Italy(17 years this month) with my Italian wife and, until fairly recently, my two beautiful daughters. raised as a diplomatic brat, i grew up on several continents culminating with a year in Burma and three and a half years in Hong Kong, all in my roaring twenties. subsequent travels overland took me throughout India and eventually through the Kyber pass to Kabul, in 1979, where the shit was just starting to hit the fan.
i’ve been a pretty dedicated ‘tourist’ ever since.
oh yeah, with gas here at about $6.30 a gallon, i don’t do much driving..and none at all in an SUV.

donkeytale @208:
sometimes we agree and sometimes we disagree
If only it were that simple. Russiagate, for example, is clearly a propaganda narrative. It is asserted without evidence and used to smear opponents.
… or else you are a hasbara troll shilling for the zionist empire!
This kind of mental boxing-in is exactly what we would expect from someone promoting propaganda narratives.
The pretense that skeptics and critics are silly conspiracy nuts is demonstrably false. We know that there ARE hasbara trolls, and we know that a lot of money is spent to influence narratives (by the usual suspects).
MOA, Caitlin Johnstone, and others spill quite a bit of digital ink debunking those narratives. Yet. It. Never. Ends.

why, i’d wager that there are former combatants of every stripe, from every war zone, who have committed atrocities, who have reintegrated into society and are walking the streets this very moment.

Thank you james!
For this comment at SST that rejects hanging the whole mess around Erdogan’s shoulders.
Erdogan bears much responsibility, but USA, Israel, Saudis, European countries and others are also guilty or complicit.

I guess the cranky old fart thinks HTS should be in the truce or de-escalation agreement.
Something rarely mentioned on various commentary on the Idlib agreements is that UNSC designated terrorist organisations are specifically excluded so always open season on them. Southfront should know better but they write up a piece that would lead anyone to believe HTS was included in the de-escalation agreement.

It will be interesting to see if the Turks turn up for the joint patrols along M4. I reckon the Russians will be there waiting. This will really put Erdo on the spot as he will have to guarantee the safety of the Russians. Scheduled for the 15th that gives time for SAA to get back up to speed and Russia to organise a few surprises for the Turk-AQ side.

Posted by: Peter AU1 | Mar 9 2020 4:43 utc | 210

peter, i don’t get why he responds the way he does… you have said nothing argumentative as i read it – just stating a fact, but then again so is he here “There obviously is not going to be a cease fire without HTS compliance.” how is that ever going to happen? they are avowed terrorists intent on their own state.. he says this in his write up which i quote here “HTS is uninterested in his (erdogans) fantasy. They have their own fantasy to fulfill.”
i think the turks have to turn up for some sort of image keeping – joint partrols along m4… just how long that lasts is like asking if it is safe to skate on thin ice… we are on thin ice here and anyone trying to skate on it better be prepared for the ice to crack..
what i liked is the fact hts said this – ‘The terrorist group also thanked the Turkish government for directly engaging in the recent battle against the SAA and its allies in Greater Idlib’ if they indeed said this and it isn’t some alteration from southfront – this is going to be hard for the pompous one to wiggle out of.. how does pompeo openly support turkey and a terrorist group at the same time?? his role in passing bs 24-7 is going to be harder with this statement from hts.. but then we always knew the usa and friends have supported the headchopper cult all along… when they come out and thank turkey, it makes it harder for them to hide as i see it..

As I see it, with these peace deals, Russia is putting pressure on Erdogan to do something about HTS. With their constant attacks, I think they are operating independent of Erdogan. These deals put pressure on Erdogan to take them under control or eliminate them. Taking control of them would most likely require killing off the leadership. The only jihadis in Syria that do not come under some form of state control now are HTS in Idlib. I have the impression Erdogan sees them as allies, somewhat like the relationship between Syria and Hezbollah.

Since this came up only at the end of the longly drawn-out last “Max Blumenthal” thread, many people here may have missed my posting there, pointing out some of Pat Lang’s deep state associations, particularly to the circle of Hillary Clinton. I think that this connection warrants some curiousity.

Today’s News
New Idlib Ceasefire Is Already Crumbling And Nobody Is Surprised

“If the promises made regarding Operation Spring Shield are not kept, we reserve the right to clean up [the area] using our own methods,” the Turkish president said….
The statement came as the Turkish Armed Forces continued their military buildup in Greater Idlib sending more and more troops and equipment to Syria. Recently Erdogan forces established several new posts north of the M4 highway, as always just near positions occupied by al-Qaeda terrorists.

Turkey Has Asked NATO for Additional Assistance on Syria – Erdogan

“[We’ve asked for] additional NATO assistance on Syria – for the defence of the border with Syria, and in connection with the migration challenge,” Erdogan said, speaking to reporters on Monday alongside NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg.
. . .
“The situation in Syria threatens Europe. No country in Europe has the right to look with indifference at the humanitarian drama in Syria,” Erdogan said.
