Will the U.S. And Israel Wage A “Summer War”?

J. Swift comments at the end of the Iran JCPOA thread (emphasis added):

After sleeping on all the increasingly shrill statements being issued by Bolton & friends designed to amp up pressure and generally beating the war drums against Iran, I woke up with a strange thought this morning. For some time there have been indications that Nuttyahoo is angling toward a summer attack on Lebanon/Hezbollah. The US has been seeing its own influence in Lebanon waning, and of course Bolton wants an excuse for a heavy but "limited" strike on Iran. I say "limited" because I'm sure the actual military planners have been pretty blunt about what an actual full blown war with Iran would look like, and it wouldn't be good. But just as with Venezuela, the neocons tend to believe their own propaganda, and believe that all of their enemies are at the tipping point because of all of their economic warfare, such that military strikes on critical civilian infrastructure is all it would take to induce the population to "throw off the yoke of oppression."

I understand the US already has a tripwire presence in Lebanon, and with all the odd, vague warnings about Iranian proxies and impending attacks, and rumblings of Israeli designs on Lebanon, and the "intel" being overtly Israeli supplied, what if it's all connected? What if the Israelis have convinced the US neocons that they are willing to "take out" Hezbollah, to secure themselves some of that peace and security, and all the US has to do is a lot of the dirty work (provide air support, etc.). Since Hezbollah is probably the most famous "Iranian proxy," the implied threat would be that if Hezbollah in any way tries to defend itself or especially strike back at Israel (which of course they will), Bolton will declare that Iran must be punished for its aggression against beloved Israel, and a massive air and missile strike will be unleashed on Iran, in hopes that it will then just roll over. If Iran tries to close the Straits, then Venezuela will be struck in like manner. Yes, I know it's all demented, but since that pretty much describes every US war plan for the last 20 years, it makes one wonder….

First: I am not aware of a U.S. "tripwire presence in Lebanon". There are, on and off, a few U.S. special forces training the Lebanese army but that is it.

There are indeed strong rumors of an attack on Lebanon during this summer. There have been discussions within Hizbullah about an expected summer war were leaked to Elijah Magnier and Abdel Bari Atwan. Hizbullah denied the reports but both are serious journalist with the necessary connections.

In his May 2 speech Hassan Nasrallah, the Hizbullah leader, talked about a threat of war against Lebanon. According to him the threat of war was not communicated from Israel, but by the Trump administration:

US Diplomats pressuring Lebanese state to give part of our territorial waters to Israel for it's possible oil and gas resources, but we will not even give them a cup of water.
US Diplomats threaten Lebanese government with war against Israel if they do not get rid of Hezbollah's ballistic [missiles] capabilities.
Israeli strategists warn of deadly weak points in IDF, despite affirming it's strong points, And I warn them of Lebanon's deadly strong points, despite it's seeming weak points.
The Axis of Resistance, in spite of sanctions, is stronger than ever.
Everyone in Israel agrees that any future war with Lebanon must be brief, decisive, and ending with a clear Israeli Victory; but who can do that now? These days are gone.
Israel that fears war with blockaded and surrounded Gaza can never hope to set foot in Lebanon.
We promise all Israeli units thinking of crossing Lebanon that they will be destroyed and humiliated on Live TV.

Current U.S. relations with the government of Lebanon are bad. The U.S. would certainly give Israel a green light should it want to wage a war. It may even entice it to attack Lebanon. The purported aim of such a war would be to destroy Hizbullah's long range missiles. Another aim would be to bring the Lebanese government under control of a USrael friendly leadership.

Both aims are delusional.

Much of Israel's vulnerable economic points would be hit before even a small share of Hizbullah's missiles would be found and eliminated. The recent short war with Gaza has again shown that Israel is not willing to sustain much damage in a fight and tried to stop it as soon as possible.

Lebanon has been through a long civil war and found a modus of understanding that underwrites the current government. That can only be changed through another civil war which no one in Lebanon is willing to fight.

Hoping that a war on Lebanon would solve any of Israel's problems is unrealistic and can only be believed in Washington DC. Israel's Bibi Netanyahoo knows of the danger and he is not a risk taker. Moreover Hizbullah's retaliation capability is only one of many reasons why a war seems unlikely.

Then again – the Islamic Jihad, a group that fights next to Hamas in the Gaza Strip but is financed by Iran, also speaks of a summer war.

Elijah J. Magnier @ejmalrai – 5:05 utc – 8 May 2019

#Palestinian Islamic Jihad Secretary general Ziyad al-Nakhla to @AlMayadeenNews : "I expect a large war this summer with #Israel".

The partners of the 'Axis of Resistance', Hizbullah in Lebanon, Syria, Iran and Shia militia in Iraq, announced several times that they would support each other in a war against Israel. It is thus likely that any attack on Lebanon (or Syria, or Iran) would see a response from another country. Hassan Nasrallah, for example, is on the record that he would "do his duty" should Iran be attacked. Any war could thus escalate in unpredictable ways.

While some hawks in the U.S. would probably welcome such an escalation, neither Israel nor its silent allies in Saudi Arabia and UAE would escape from receiving significant damage. They know this and will act accordingly.

The most important reason why a summer war is unlikely is Donald Trump. He wants to win a reelection. A months long, unpredictable war that might cause serious damage to Israel and other U.S. allies in the region could be catastrophic for him.

Some of his advisors, most obviously John 'Stache' Bolton, but others too, may well try to instigate a war. But the ultimate 'decider' is Donald Trump and I, for now, see no reason for him to wage one.

Europe is most likely following the money with no thought for anything else. They do more business with US than Iran. On the other side, they do not give up Russian gas for more expensive US gas.

What really pisses me off about Brexit is the hypocrisy of the Brexiteers. They want to recover British “sovereignty” from Europe but if the Conservatives remain in power will happily pass it off to Washington to add to the major loss of sovereignty through NATO. I really hope Corbyn wins the next election and withdraws the UK from NATO.
Meanwhile in southern Idlib, South Front are reporting that Khan Shakyun leaders are in reconciliation talks with Damascus. As one of the terms, Damascus should demand a full accounting of the alleged chemical weapon attack just over two years ago. I doubt western governments or media will pay any attention to what the locals say by claiming that the locals were coerced into say what really happened by the Damascus government, but at least it might go someway to further discrediting that sniveling piece of pondlife, Bellingcat.

W. Wilson was being quietly ravaged by a mind-bending disease and Paul Warburg [of European central banker fame] almost certainly knew it. To this day very few are aware of the circumstances that made Wilson most vulnerable to compromise, i.e. the potential blackmail.
The 1912 election shenanigans were clearly nonsense unless Wilson’s being compromised would account for the strange arrangements that produced his victory over William Taft and Teddy Roosevelt;followed by WW’s signing into law the Fed Reserve Act passed by Congress the day before Christmas Eve.
At the Repub convention to re-nominate popular incumbent Taft for re election, Teddy R. suddenly announces he’ll run on a 3rd party ticket. Thus popular TR/Bull Moose Party received more votes than popular W.Taft [splitting the Republican votes!] and Wilson won.
Thus arrived The Federal Reserve and then the Personal Income Tax, etc.
P.S. mind-bending in the sense that Ehrlich’s “silver bullet” arrived too late.

IMO, the final decisions are made by the people who own the system, according to how much business is disrupted by military actions taken.
Generals have a life AFTER THE MILITARY, and the corporations finance much of it.
IF, they play ball with the mega corporations, and make the PROFITABLE CHOICES….

One suspects that few, if any, MoA-ers are mystified about what’s going on in Western Politics. WE already know that the majority of politicians are selected, nominated, and proposed as candidates, by one or another ‘Party’ in an opaque process conducted behind closed doors. It’s safe to assume, or more realistically, stupid NOT to assume, that there’s an ‘understanding’ between the leadership of the party and various vested geo-political and commercial interests, that ALL candidates are committed to selling out there allegiance to voters in exchange for MONEY.
And that is the most serious problem faced by the governed in the West. We don’t need to talk about the obvious decay of Trust & Truth. We need to talk about how to fix it fairly and speedily before it becomes necessary to round them all up and lynch them.

@ chu teh with the Federal Reserve history…thanks
And more to the point to those who don’t believe that Trump is an active apprentice to the elite that continue to control global private finance. Trump, by playing himself, as his minders expect, is creating the perfect fog of chaos for the elite to use to throw America under the bus as the culprit for the evils of the latest empire and quietly embed themselves and private finance in the new world order.
I continue to hope that China/Russia will bring justice to that new world order but until I read about trials for war crimes including folks arrested/imprisoned and read an equitable resolution to the public/private property/finance conundrum, I am going to be skeptical about real evolution of our species.

Political reform in the West must begin with demands for complete, transparent, daily financial scrutiny of every individual and entity involved with electoral politics. People with nothing to hide would have nothing to fear. So anyone who objects to openness and scrutiny probably wasn’t our friend to begin with.

With New Labour being a prime example. What these PASOK wannabe pseudo-democratic ‘socialist’ parties have in common is acceptance of neo-liberal political economy.
Once they have accepted not just capitalism but capitalism under rules over which capitalists have a veto, nothing else matters. The fiercest egalitarians and the most committed defenders of the poor can do nothing: all the important matters have been moved out of the political arena, reducing legislatures to talking shops so boring that only greedy careerists and fans of bureaucracy want to enter them.
At the same time parties have been stripped of the right to determine policy at conventions and nominate candidates for elections. It was a complete accident that Jeremy Corbyn survived efforts to replace him with a neo-liberal and another that he scraped together, just, enough MP nominations to run for election. It was an unintended consequence of the smashing of Trade Unions that their power to dominate the Labour Party and suppress radical tendencies was eroded and the traditional stitch ups, which left the rank and file membership powerless and consequently drove all without ulterior motive out of the party, no longer worked.

Once re-elected Trump has no more compelling reasons to pamper Israel as he is now. He will back down and concentrate on the US economy, Russia, China and Venezuela. For that he needs to kick out Bolton and Pompeo who has messed up the relation with these countries. He will do that just after his election, under the pretext of a “new start”.

US, Iran must both tread lightly with tensions running so high

“However, the two countries(US/Iran) no longer have formal channels of communication or an off-ramp to de-escalate tensions. As a result, the slightest miscalculation or misunderstanding can quickly spiral.
In the past, such channels have been vital to the management of complicated matters. For example, in 2016, when U.S. sailors entered Iranian waters by mistake, leading to their capture by Iran’s paramilitary Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, channels of communication between Washington and Tehran secured their quick release.
Today, no such channel is available and a similar incident could add more tensions and lead to escalation between the two nations.

Imagine this is of great use to the actor that decides to drop the match and probably took some work to accomplish.
Trump’s top intelligence and military advisers held unusual meeting at CIA on Iran, officials say

“National security meetings are typically held in the White House Situation Room. The six current officials, as well as multiple former officials, said it is extremely rare for senior White House officials or cabinet members to attend a meeting at CIA headquarters.“

“Five former CIA operations officers and military officials said that in the past, such meetings have been held at CIA headquarters to brief top officials on highly sensitive covert actions, either the results of existing operations or options for new ones.“

“Another possible reason to hold a meeting of senior White House officials at Langley is if there is disagreement about what the intelligence shows on a particular subject, said John McLaughlin, a former acting CIA director. Then-Vice President Dick Cheney frequently traveled to CIA to grill analysts about intelligence, McLaughlin said. Critics later accused Cheney of seeking to cherry-pick intelligence suggesting that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction, a charge he denies. The CIA and other agencies wrongly assessed that Iraq had WMD.

“The CIA has a seasoned intelligence officer, Mike D’Andrea, running its Iran operations. D’Andrea oversaw U.S. drone strikes that targeted al Qaeda militants and the effort to hunt down bin Laden.“

Nothing to see here folks, move along.

As this thread is premised on speculation (and I don’t mean that in a bad way – it is helpful at times to look at the ‘what if’s’ and see if they hold up, given clues in the national and international narratives,) I’d like to propose a further speculation that might have different consequences.
What if Trump doesn’t want a second term? I mean, he is ageing, he has family concerns; and while he may love the power he currently has, if indeed some of his aims are being stymied, what is to say he would want to continue with them for another four years? Given all the questions about his character, his love of power etc., I don’t think Trump is naturally a political animal, as for instance, Sanders is. I can see the latter going on and on into his 90’s perhaps.
I wonder whether Trump cares as doggedly as a politician would about his ‘legacy’ politically speaking. He does indeed want to live his life according to his own priorities, and I would say he keeps those pretty much concealed, maybe even from himself. He has a persona; he is selfmade, proud of being so even as it looks to some (to many) that it is a fake persona. I don’t think we can discount the possibility he may simply decide to return to private life.
And then, what happens? Most presidents avidly want that second term, as we see with Netanyahoo. What if Trump decides he doesn’t?
(I wouldn’t mind being shot down on this – as I say; it’s speculative, not something I believe. I simply don’t know.)

I see Trump as have to priorities for his Presidency. Destroying Israel’s enemies, and setting the US up with a new form of leverage over much of the world so that US will retain dominance for some decades. Possibly destroying Israel’s enemies take priority over setting up US dominance or possibly not. If destroying Israel’s enemies is the priority, he may try that in the first term rather than risk an election.

re my post @ 107 and Fed Reserve. Apparently Edward Griffin/Creature From Jeckyll Island either never got wind of it was unable source it.
Only principals knew and dome of their immediate families. Apparently their is nothing in print, ever, with any specific detail; and vague tales completely unsourced that only hinted of unspecified disease. It is possible that Ehrlich did not know.
Re your “be skeptical about real evolution of our species”–
by almost chance I read in 1950s Wilder Penfield’s “Speech And Brain Mechanisms” account of his [and Lamar Roberts} investigations to resolve whether the “mind” and “brain” are the same or separate. He had wondered on it throughout his career as a noted brain-surgeon.
About 1950, His final word on that riddle was that he could not answer with any certainty!. He and Lamar did their work at McGill Univ in Montreal, probing the brain of many wide-awake patients and utterly fascinated with their recalls out of the distant past and other phenomena coincident with the probing.
Evolution or not, the clear inability to understand words such as body/mind/spirit/soul/life/death/I/we/memory[human]/thoughts and thinking/etc means, perhaps, we [oops]are in a situation not meant to be figured-out by us [oops]. I.e., some kind of deliberate trap beyond our current, exceptional/advanced faculties.

@ chu teh with our continued OT discussion about mind and brain
Having now had 220 neurofeedback sessions of mucking with the bio-electric mysteries of my body I would say we are close to combining mind/brain into a more sophisticated metaphor of sentience.
An astrocyte sets up and clears out neuronal synaptic junctions. If it does not set them up, no amount of Big Pharma bio-chemistry is going to happen. And while those astrocytes are doing their thing, they are sending bio-electric signals to their neighbors we really don’t understand and can barely measure.

If destroying Israel’s enemies is the priority, he may try that in the first term rather than risk an election.

Assuming there isn’t some kind of violent event where Trump installs himself as President For Life, I’m going on record to predict he won’t be around after 2020. The man was hand-selected to be even worse than the worst politician in recent history to ensure her election. That strategy failed, and Trump has proved to be a national embarrassment. It’s true some groups have done well with him. But those people are holding their new tax cuts and regulation roll-backs and have a rightwingnut Supreme Court for the next generation. What more can he do for them? Not much, and his erratic and idiotic behavior now poses a genuine threat to them. As you suggest, the apartheid Jewish state has done well too, and hopes to squeeze even more out of their clueless puppet.
Again, Trump doesn’t just lose in the next election, but he loses in a landslide to any of the “mainstream” Democrats. Failing the President For Life business, I think he will engineer something which will force a resignation or refusal to run again. Heart attack? Stroke? After a decent interval there would be a miraculous recovery, of course.

B4Real @ 65:
I put in the word “hoax” to describe the document to warn off unnecessary speculation, at least until we know something more about it or about the newspaper Israel Hayom which first reported on it.
Well now we do know more about Israel Hayom: it is owned by Sheldon Adelson, the casino billionaire who donated heavily to Trump’s 2016 Presidential campaign, it is very pro-Satanyahu and it operates on a dubious business model, heavily subsidised by its owner, making huge losses and yet managing to destabilise the news media industry in Israel with consequences for press freedoms in that country. (I have the feeling Israel Hayom is being given away for free, with the result that it is affecting the sales of other, more reputable newspapers in Israel.)
So the newspaper itself may have “leaked” the document, its authenticity dubious as it is with no clear source, to test for likely reactions to aspects of the Deal of the Century before it comes out in mid-May.

Israel is not going to spill its blood when it has the US and the EU to get it done for them. Iran is the key. A missile hitting a US carrier fired by a third party with interest in making war in the Gulf would get it started for them like the Gulf of Tonkin in Vietnam, the Lusitania in WWI, the Maine in Cuba during the Spanish American War.
Yellow journalism got its start in the Spanish American war. Imagine the effect on the hearts and minds of the people. The pump has been primed.
Lebanon is low hanging fruit for them. They need to get it going in the Gulf and Iran is public enemy number one. Taking out Iran is a big win for them across the board. Lebanon is small potatoes.
Iran is not that stupid, it would take a third party to get it done. It would be easy to blame it on Iran and I would not put it past our most favorite ally in the region. The level of evil is that high and the possibilities are endless.

This “solution” would be uncontroversal in Israel. Sheldon Adelson owns the US embassy move to Jerusalem, so the document is probably real and as you say an attempt to see reactions.
What the document does not spell out is how they intend to disarm the Palestinians in Gaza.
And this is the issue this dance towards war is about. Netanyahu will not risk the lifes of Israelis for it. The US won’t do it. Let’s see if the Qatari money comes through and Israel’s strategy of starving Gaza will have failed.
