I read some reports earlier in the week about the SAA claiming to have shot down an Israeli warplane and a drone over the Golan Heights. I haven’t heard anyone breathe a word about it since the reports and subsequent denial. I can’t fathom why the SAA would lie about something so serious, nor would I have expected the Israeli gov would not to exploit it for propaganda or escalation purposes. Can anyone shed some light on this? Posted by: FecklessLeft | Sep 17 2016 17:37 utc | 1 Interesting if true: U.S. bombs Syrian army at Deir Ezzor. Posted by: Slekkus | Sep 17 2016 18:17 utc | 4 #1 Posted by: jo6pac | Sep 17 2016 18:18 utc | 5 FecklessLeft@1 – Syrians fired their SAMs against both targets and the missiles likely exploded – the explosions themselves may have been visible from the ground (depends). Whether they actually hit the targets and/or took them down is debatable. This was at night and the targets would have been several tens of kilometers away. Impossible to have seen (visually) exactly what happened from the SAM site besides maybe the explosion. The targets were well into the Golan in Israeli-occupied/head-chopper controlled territory, so the Syrians couldn’t verify by the wreckage if they were, indeed, taken down. The Israelis are never going to admit to anything, of course.
with these follow-ups:
The Israelis have pretty good jamming and advanced anti-radiation missiles (used to take out SAM sites) that can be fired from quite a distance away. So the retaliatory strike is possible and – I would say – expected. The SAA SAM capabilities by themselves are limited. Posted by: PavewayIV | Sep 17 2016 18:22 utc | 7 RT is reporting 62 Syrians dead in US air strike. How will Russia handle this provocation? When is enough … enough? Posted by: woogs | Sep 17 2016 18:33 utc | 8 Russia is confirming (via information from the SAA, apparently rather than directly though) that US planes attacked SAA at the Dier EzZor airport, killing 62 troops. Sputnik article Posted by: WorldBLee | Sep 17 2016 18:34 utc | 9 LOL Posted by: bbbb | Sep 17 2016 18:42 utc | 10 Amazing that not even a week goes by, and USA bullies its way into existence in Syria and takes out 62 Syrian military personel. I bet those soldiers fought like heroes for hte past 5 years, and are now all vaporized – finito. Posted by: bbbb | Sep 17 2016 18:48 utc | 11 If reports are true, looks like Daesh has an air force. How will this play to the American people? The mistrust of our government’s intentions is already strong. Kind of makes sense. The Duck in the foreground a la Shrub, with Pence in the background a la Cheney. The foregrounders prance about and carry on, the backgrounders take care of business. Posted by: jfl | Sep 20 2016 13:47 utc | 33 The Al Jazeera English Newshour broadcast of Obama’s farewell UN speech was was a bit of a surprise. The co-hosts are a male and a female reporter. The male reporter, when asked by his co-host to share his initial thoughts after the speech, launched into an anti-Obama tirade, indignantly calling the speech a “Sermon” and pointing out its numerous flaws, omissions, general hypocrisy, and “the gap between words and deeds.” Posted by: Hoarsewhisperer | Sep 20 2016 17:09 utc | 34 This may have already been posted, but I just came across it. Debunking this “reasoning” is pretty short work.
He also makes short work in comparing Mrs. Clinton with The Duckhead on environmental policy. She has endorsements from major environmental groups. Trump thinks global warming is a Chinese hoax.
I think “treacherously stupid” is a bit over the top. “Willfully stupid” I’d say.

Hurray for the Italians! Wonder if it’s related to …
Fort Russ concentrates on the ‘US orders EU to …’ aspect of it … might it not be just an attempt at preempting what cannot be held back any longer? Cracks beginning to open between the US and NATO/the EU? Let us hope they spread quickly and that all of Europe calves off from the North American ice field and just floats away on its own! Posted by: jfl | Sep 25 2016 7:10 utc | 59 UNSC to hold meeting amid fresh violence in Syria’s Aleppo
The US/FR/UK pull a UNSC stunt of their own. This is merely the predictable end of the salafists in Aleppo, now that every possible attempt at a ceasefire has been attempted by Syria/Russia, then literally blown up by the US/ISAF and its ‘moderate’ wahabists on the ground. Posted by: jfl | Sep 25 2016 7:27 utc | 60 Must read piece by Rob Unz:
I was in Europe when this happened, so I didn’t really pay attention at the time. My main exposure to TWA 800 up until now was reading articles about it in the New York Review of Books by a Harvard comparative literature professor. Her theory was that the plane went down because of testing of electronic counter-measures that the US Navy was carrying out. That she didn’t pay much or any attention to the missile theory as far as I can recall is weird in itself.
