China Announces Rice Bag Fallen Over - NYT: "It's About US!"

This willful misinterpreting of Chinese government announcement by the New York Times can only be explained by some laughable egocentric U.S. view. "It's all about US!"

NYT: China to Halt Its Building of Islands, but Not Its Projects on Them

BEIJING — China announced on Tuesday that it would soon halt island-building projects around some reefs and shoals in disputed waters of the South China Sea but that it would continue constructing military and civilian facilities on those outcroppings.

The announcement may have been intended to ease tensions with the United States, which has strongly criticized the building of the islands and has sent surveillance flights close to the sites, to the chagrin of the Chinese military. The construction of facilities, though, would further establish the sites as islands that China could claim as its territory.

No, the Chinese institutions did not announce the HALT of its building of islands. It announced that the building of some islands was about to be FINISHED.

Xinhua: China to complete land reclamation of construction on some Nansha Islands soon

BEIJING, June 16 (Xinhua) -- The land reclamation project of China's construction on some stationed islands and reefs of the Nansha Islands, as planned, will be completed in the upcoming days, according to relevant Chinese competent departments.
...
After the land reclamation, China will start the building of facilities to meet relevant functional requirements, Lu said.

He stressed the construction activities on the Nansha islands and reefs fall within the scope of China's sovereignty, which are "lawful, reasonable and justified."

The NYT speculates on no factual basis that the "halt", which never happened, "may have been intended to ease tensions with the United States".

No. The "halt" clearly was not intended for that. There was no "halt". The reclamation phase is finished. It is complete. The building projects on the islands will continue. And no, China does not care what the U.S., or the NYT writers, want to spin around its projects. Like other countries in the South China Sea it uses the islands it controls as it sees fit and without regard for empty U.S. bullying.

Are there some magical red, white and blue colored glasses one can wear to misread clearly worded Chinese announcement in such a way?

Update: The NYT has now heavily edited and changed its story without noting the changes. The first sentence now reads:

BEIJING — By declaring Tuesday that it would soon complete its contentious program of building artificial islands in the South China Sea, Beijing hopes to diminish tensions with the United States while reassuring its home audience that it has delivered on its pledge to resist American military pressure, experts said.

The "halt" turned into the more correct "complete". But the general "it's about US" nonsense continues and is now supported with "expert" voices. Here are screenshots of the original version (1, 2) quoted above.

China must accept that the US is 'the exceptional nation', 'the shining city on the hill', 'the one indispensable nation' and 'the Master of the Universe' only then will we acknowledge they have the right to small military forces, which must be confined within their own borders of course.

No red, white and blue glasses required when so many in US(media) have red, white and blue is tattooed to their brain(s)...

Yep, the New York Times is desperate to convince itself and its readers that the (evil) US Empire can still threaten and harass other nations successfully, and will still be the dominant Empire for centuries to come.

"Are there some magical red, white and blue colored glasses one can wear to misread clearly worded Chinese announcement in such a way?"

They are no such glasses, magical or otherwise. They are called simply blinders.

Part of the panic on the Potomac following Friday's torpedoing of the TPP Fast Track by House Democrats is it is widely regarded inside the Beltway to be the death knell for Obama's Asia Pivot. The NYT front-page "analysis" yesterday by Peter Baker was chock full of quotes from think tank sages like the following: "'There is no Asia pivot without an economic component, and that component is tied up in T.P.P.,' said Walter Lohman, director of the Asian studies program at the Heritage Foundation."

The U.S. can makes noises as if it is going to confront China militarily. But with a multi-front war in the Middle East, a New Cold War with Russia, a losing campaign against the Taliban, who can believe it?

I can see tomorrow's NYT cover story now...

"Moon of Alabama frustrated China has accepted all US demands."

@6 wg - lol...

i don't know why anyone would bother to read the nyt, wapo or wsj unless they wanted to catch up on which way the exceptional nations propaganda was blowing..

This would be funny if it wasn't so ridiculous on its merit. Between Congress & the "O" clan, "the gang that couldn't shoot straight" takes on new meaning. Clowns all, with no exceptions allowed.

The truth is the Beijing Gangsters Club [sic] has no claim to these areas and has simply stolen them. For the moment, their strategy is the same as Putin. Just roll in and let the criticisms fly. Only some day someone will let loose a cannon or missile.....

The Yankees are back in "Let's do Something, even if it's stupid" mode.

Prodding The Bear & The Dragon simultaneously was just another one of those "Seemed like a good idea at the time" blunders which plague what passes for US Foreign Policy.

Yankees look at remote places in the World through a kaleidoscope instead of a telescope. The upside is that, if the image is not to one's liking, the k'scope can be incrementally rotated to the right until it produces a more pleasing image. The downside is that the image comprises a clutter of chips and splinters of half-baked ideological time warps and claptrap which obscure the object being "studied."

It seems so paltry that the NYT journalist would likely have written the article verbatim from the Chinese release. To understand how the editors make that subtle change and convince the author that it is necessary would be a delight.

Who the hell cares if they reclaim this land? But,the narrative must be constant with not a crack in the facade to seed a nucleation point for conscience observation to take hold.

Is it sinister? Is it subtle? Are the changes made without consent from the journalist who penned the article?

Long since become adept at reading between the lies of AmeriKan media bullshit. You have to, or else you become just as under-informed as everyone else.
The "colors" of the flag, as sung by Exodus' "Scar Spangled Banner" should be the new AmeriKan national anthem:

Oh say can you fucking see
The missiles fall like rain
Bloody mountains majesty
Dead bodies on the plain
By the bombing's eerie light
See the crimson waves of red
What so proudly they all fell
The twilight of the dead

America - the violent
The indifferent
God shit his grace on me
America - the arrogant
The belligerent
Will live in infamy
We the people, for no people
Secure the blessings of tragedy
Do ordain we have established
The scar spangled banner

We pledge allegiance to no god
Only to the blood
Liberty is just a dream
When dying in the mud
This, the land of the deceived,
Home of the depraved
Bombs, they drop like falling leaves
And the deadly flag still waves

Red - the beautiful color of blood
Flowing like a stream
White - the color of bleaching bone
Lovely and obscene
Blue - the bruising color of flesh
Battered, ripped and torn
The colors of the flag of hate
Of violence and porn
What you see is what you get
You haven't see the bloody trail yet
I'm no patriot, just a hate-triot

Blood sport, my sure bet
See the flag, get a body bag
Salvation from a .44 mag.
Nothing left, no one saved
Cause our goddamn motherfucking bloody ass
Banner still waves

This is more proof that the US is engaged in a domestic media campaign to make the US appear to be strong and/or greatly loved by even former enemies such as Vietnam. I see this a lot it seems. I call it a campaign in the sense that it is specific effort in these crucial times of conflict with both China and Russia, a burning Middle East, and the attempts to push these trade deals through.

I assume it is based on the fact that US citizens might turn to isolationism if the true facts of world opinion were known here. Plus there is the need to create, domestically, the impressions that US interventionism has made the US loved across the globe because then the US can disguise efforts to fight China behind the "intervening for poor Vietnam" meme. It also helps the TPP get passed, after all, there must be a great many US citizens who think that dealing w/ Communist Vietnam is a disgrace.

This campaign also provides a nice cover for the Vietnam stories we're sure to hear over the next 10 years or so, as the 50th anniversaries of the horrific war come and go. It would be a good time for the US to think about those events, and mull over them. To recall the division of this country, the hell we inflicted onto another so far away... yet we'll probably not get that kind of coverage. We'll get puff pieces.

As for this idea that, politically, the Vietnamese could allow a US carrier group to park in Cam Rahn Bay during these 50th Anniversary commemorations seems to be, IMHO, a ridiculous US fantasy.

Here's the newsdiffs for the article b mentioned. It's been changed seven times!

Newsdiffs is a great resource btw, shows all these changes which happen VERY often and often contain important material, or changes in tone. B, I thought you've used it in the past? I'm certain I learned of it here, anyway.
