N.Y.P.D. Officers Earn Disrespect – Except One Of Them

Officers of the world's seventh biggest army, the New York Police Department, defied their commander in chief, mayor de Blasio, by turning their back to him while he gave a funeral eulogy for one of them. de Blasio had earlier refrained from endorsing the killing of an unarmed black man by some N.Y.P.T. officers. Such racist murder by policemen is a regular occurrence in New York.

One officer though did not follow the sheeple.

Billmon rightly compares the picture above with this one. It was shot, I believe, in 1936 in Hamburg, Germany.

The story did not end well for the man in 1936. How will it end for the black N.Y.P.D. officer?

de Blasio should fire every officer that defied him. That likely would not even increase the number of criminals on New York's streets. They would only no longer wear a uniform.

Thank you for finding that picture. I was disgusted when I saw black officers turn they’re back on the Mayor. Some of his policies I do not necessarily agree with (supporting Israel for one)but to turn their backs shows a great deal disrespect not only for Mayor DeBalsio but all the residents of NYC. I am sorry but the NYC police must earn the respect of the people. If I do something wrong then I must be held accountable same applies to them. Just because you are a police officer does not mean you are immune. I hold DeBalsio does not buckle from this and maybe he’s the one to finally fix this corrupt Nazi fascist union that believe they themselves are above the law. Enough. If I didn’t lack complete faith in the ability of the American people to see through this mangled and overplayed political stunt this wouldn’t be a worry. The protests would march on and gain strength and publicity. But that won’t happen. People will buy the hollow story that demanding accountability and non-racist policing is tantamount to shooting hero police officers. (Un)fortunately this will only embolden the police to exert more power and violence, which will continue to be documented. Basically because we live on Mars the tipping point has not been reached, but we can trust that the police will find it, and it will be a grotesque and shamefull state of affairs when we collectively arrive there.

Me too. I’ve taken to calling it holocaust porn. And it’s everywhere: NPR, BBC, the movies. Enough already. The national airwaves, which the people of the US own, should be used to inform them about present economic conditions (which 99% of them don’t understand) and secret agreements being made in Geneva, like the Trade in Services Act (TiSA), which will remove all legal protections for not only Americans but everyone in the developed countries.
We need informed commentary about how the long-term consequences of the sanctions on Iran and Russia is going to hurt the USA. As China becomes the banker of last resort for countries that the US sanctions, it is building the financial infrastructure to become the reserve currency within 15 years.

Yesterday there were demonstrations in many large cities in which people were wearing shirts and carrying signs, saying “Blue lives count”. In my grocery clerks were wearing t-shirts saying “I can’t breath”.
My takeaway from yesterdays’ speeches was is was a strange kind of celebration of the militarizing of police. More, it was celebrating the police exactly like they celebrate the ‘heros’ in the military.

It would almost certainly open the floodgates to the final wave of privatization of public services, including the provision of healthcare, education and water. Meanwhile, already privatized companies would be prevented from a re-transfer to the public sector by a so-called barring “ratchet clause” – even if the privatization failed.

The media play a large role how the present credibility of mayor de Blasio and the police unions are perceived by the public. I watched CNNi for some live reports and was taken aback for its one-sided reporting in favor of the hardline police unions by repeated showing of the video where most, but not all, NY policemen turned their backs on a passing mayor de Blasio. Speaking of undermining one’s authority. The murder of two cops in Brooklyn was a criminal act as is happening daily across the US and elsewhere. Throwing fuel on a burning fire is not the way to act and is quite irresponsible by persons in leadership. Shame on you police union leadership!

The problem is much more entrenched than people realize. Cops everywhere terrorize citizens and their mayors – producing the schizophrenic political campaigns to cut public funding for municipal staff while increasing cop benefits, arms, numbers, you name it. These guys don’t even need to go to school! And they threaten to assassinate the mayor where I live.
They are brownshirts, it is the very definition of fascism, and quite a natural result of this breeding ground in the US.
If you actually get to hear what they say in person, you will learn that they feel victimized by Black (& Brown) people who they see as being allowed to get away with things and get more free stuff and opportunities because they are minorities. It sounds nutty, but it is a common viewpoint of uneducated blue-collar people who have fewer options today, and the police gang is their family. The murders of people of color are intentional. One of them (Gelhaus) in California actually wrote about how to justify killing kids with toy guns before he viciously murdered a 13-year-old with a toy gun. The police will continue.

Di Blasio must be very careful. He must proceed quietly and act as if he and the police are on the same page in some instances. He has to change the upper leadership and transfer the old guard that supports this disaffection from the officers. If he pushes too hard the blue line will revolt.
Their actions will and can include turning a blind eye to law infractors.
Actually raising the body count of more people of color, thereby throwing more fuel on the fire.
The cops also committing more of the crimes or helping and aiding in crime that are at a relatively low level now.
The police might actually be hacthing a plot paint DiBlasio as another Dinkins, weak, ineffectual and corrupt.
DiBlasio is in quite a pickle.

Cops all over, like other executive powers in the US, have too long been allowed to do their work not bound through the normal checks and balances that were developed to keep them in line.
Cops so often act as judge, jury, and executioner. It is the mirror image, on the city level, that we see on a global with Obama’s drone programs, the CIA’s efforts around the world, and George W. Bush wrenching the war-making powers away from the US Congress.

Well, now they have them. The lying media and oportunistic types, such as the mayor, are directly responsible for the shooting death of 2 cops, who, BTW, WERE meant to be white, but the killer only mistook Ramos and Liu for whites because of the late hour at which the shootings took place.
Also, much can be discussed in the Garner case but a few FACTS are clear to anybody interested in the TRUTH: the police arrested Garner due to his selling of untaxed cigarettes which is a crime. Store owners appear to have called the cops, probably cause they feel harmed by that kind of competition. If one feels that such black market operations should be allowed, one should nevertheless understand that the police cannot choose which laws to enforce. Garner, btw, had been arrested over 30 times until his final encounter with the police. The other fact is that IT IS CLEAR from the footage that the cop did NOT murder Garner. He had no intention of causing the man any serious harm and clearly used the hold merely as a means to take Garner down so he could be put into cuffs. Garners poor health coupled with the stress of the situation led to his unfortunate death. As a brown belt in BJJ, I’m very familiar with a variety of chokeholds and we should not exagerate them either. I’ve seen many practioneers pass out without any other serious consequences.
SO, the death of Mr.Garner was unfortunate but it was NOT murder, much less RACIST MURDER. This is BS. I’ve looked at the police stats from NY and in fact, it’s easier to be shot by police if you are white than if black.
B’s line that NYPD cops routinely ‘murder’ blacks and that it is due to racism is pure wishful thinking.
94% of blacks in Zamerica are murdered by other blacks and even though blacks are at most 13% of the population they commit over 50% of homicides.
Alas, we don’t see zamerican blacks or liberal race baiters talking about these relevant issues.

Three cops were charged and found guilt of criminally negligent homicide in 1983 in the Michael Stewart case. The NYPD made it an absolute policy in 1993. In Garner’s case, the Medical Examiner ruled Garner’s death a homicide,
To suggest that selling individual cigarettes on the street is tantamout to selling countraband interfering with retail stores is risible. He probably bouught the cigarettes in the store he was outside of.

A major problem in investigating police violence is that prosecutors and district attorneys are generally used to working together with the police to obtain indictments and convictions.
Forcing them to work against the police department is tantamount to a conflict of interest. We need different mechanisms and procedures for cases in which police officers are the suspects.

Actually TISA is part and parcel of TTIP, and is the part of TTIP that the various campaigns across Europe (WoW, Rosa Luxemburg Stiftung, etc.) are focusing on and most vociferously trying to highlight, as the worst aspect of TTIP.

Yes, I hear you. It does seem unprofessional for the police to have turned their backs on the mayor.
And yet, and yet… even if you don’t agree with the reasons for their doing it, I personally am somewhat happy that at least one fraction of this country are not just good little robots.
A foolish politeness is the hobgoblin of sheep and other domestic animals. If the rich and powerful can take us for granted they will.
There is a difference between having manners, and being a masochist.
So soldiers sent off to fight stupid wars with poor equipment are all supposed to cheer Dubya and Obama? I think this country needs MORE disrespect, not less! When a politician lies in public, we should boo him/her and scream ‘liar’. When they give everything off to the banks, and engage us in stupid wars, they should be afraid to show their faces in public out of shame. When their names come up in discussion we should splutter with anger at how they’ve shafted us, not defer to them as ‘senior statesmen’ and ‘serious people’. Why not? I wonder why wealthy white people never get shot by cops. We can reach into our cars at traffic stops, argue with them, do illegal things, refuse an order, you name it. But we NEVER get shot for it or wrestled to the ground into a chokehold that would probably kill MANY of us. Why do you suppose that is?
And why do you think a poor Black man deserves to be shot or choked to death? Is that a fair punishment to you? I doubt you would think so if it were your family.

I cannot help but return to the thought of LucaK’s comment suggesting a man deserves to be asphyxiated by police simply because he isn’t physically fit enough to survive the ordeal.
That is such a barbaric notion that belongs to the type of people who believe themselves to be superior by genetics. If you can’t survive a few broken ribs when you are crushed by several uneducated adult men with guns, you deserve it?

I have never understood the mentality that elevates the life of one human being — say a police officer — above that of another’s, but it seems like such an easy premise to sell to a gullible and easily led audience. The story of the two NYPD officers “executed” by the crazed black man was pitched so perfectly to our somnambulant nation, it makes one marvel that one crafty enough CAN sell ice to Eskimos, and create a black-Friday crush of people wanting to get in on the deal! I tend to agree with a recent piece on Counterpunch by Norman Pollock- there’s a top down contempt for oversight that will and should have bad repercussions:

The chief democratic political principle is ACCOUNTABILITY. By that token, whatever happens in USG, here, torture, waterboarding, drone assassination–all acknowledged war crimes–goes directly up to the president. The conclusion: Pres. Obama is a war criminal, no DOJ eloquence, no silver-tongued public intellectuals, can distort that unvarnished truth.
Therefore, as a war criminal, he has committed treason against a democratic America and should be discharged from office for treasonous conduct. Again, unvarnished truth. And then, unceremoniously handed over to the International Criminal Court.

Yep. No love lost for DeBlasio — but those cops should be fired or severely reprimanded (with loss of pay) for their actions. And increase the diversity of the NYPD and NYFD to diminish the effects that nepotism and mendacity has wrought.

Mr.anon, You are obviously a very emotional and silly individual, not
to mention dishonest.
First of all, Garner didn’t die from suffocation. He suffered a heart
attack and later died at the hospital.
He was pronounced dead about an hour after the arrest.
Nowhere did I write he deserved to die or anything even remotely
close to it. All I’m saying is the cop did not mean to cause him
any serious harm and, in a sense, that it was not the hold that
killed Garner. As someone who has trained for years in BJJ, i could
tell that right away after I saw the vid.
How about listening to 2 BJJ black belt masters on this issue of
what happened to Garner? Ryron and Rener Gracie, from the famed
BJJ Brazilian Gracie clan discuss it in a thorough manner, worth

Did they see the body? examine it? have any medical training? law expertise?
I will accept their authority on violence, but that puts them on the side as the NYPD, in PR territory, perhaps even looking for, or protecting, a contract. Any money from NYPD to the BJ dudes?

Rolling Stone picked up a quote by the Post that sums up everything wrong here…
“…the protesting police have decided to make arrests ‘only when they have to.’ (Let that sink in for a moment. Seriously, take 10 or 15 seconds).”
And this is what makes this such a weird and cognitively dissonant phenomenon. The NYC police are protesting by doing their job and painting it as a bad thing.
RS concludes that, “…under normal circumstances, this slowdown wouldn’t just make sense, it would be heroic.
Unfortunately, this protest is not about police refusing to shake people down for money on principle.”
