Hubris “Far Beyond” Any Borders

The Washington Post claims:

A recent spate of dangerous midair encounters between American military aircraft and Chinese and Russian planes in the Pacific is the result of increasingly assertive strategies by both U.S. adversaries to project power far beyond their borders, according to the top U.S. Air Force commander in the region.

Far beyond their borders? That is a bit curious as neither China nor Russia have, besides their nuclear missiles, any real military capability for such power projection. So how "far beyond their borders" does this really go?

[Air Force Gen. Herbert “Hawk” Carlisle, the head of U.S. Pacific Air Forces, ] said U.S. and Chinese forces are frequently encountering each other in parts of the East China and South China seas … China’s navy has conducted more exercises farther away from its shores and is closely patrolling areas in disputed waters where Chinese companies are drilling for oil.

That incident occurred in international airspace about 135 miles east of China’s Hainan Island.

Funny how all the incidents listed to provide examples for China's power projection "in the Pacific" and "far beyond" its borders happened in the two China seas and near the Chinese shoreline.

Now how about Russian power projection "far beyond" its borders?

On Sept. 17, U.S. fighter jets intercepted a half-dozen Russian military planes — two fighter jets, two long-range bombers and two refueling tankers — as they were flying in international airspace near the coast of Alaska.

Umm – is that the same Alaska from which a certain U.S. vice president candidate could actually see Russia? That then must really be "far beyond" Russia's borders, right?

Really, how dare these countries to have their borders so very near to U.S. ships and air-planes?

I find the hubris expressed in such nonsensical claims "far beyond" any rationality.

Nice post b.
The recent mid-air brush of the P-3c with a Chinese J-11 fighter jet might have changed the situation somewhat. While the Whitehouse and Pentagon still insisted that ‘Merika has the right to open air space in South China Sea, such spy flights are expected to be curtailed over time. Those were subjects of discussion in recent high level consultation between US and China. Susan Rice’s visit last month to Beijing was one of such consultation to settle things down a bit.

Imperial hubris is indeed the correct term for this sort of mentality, b. The ‘indispensable nation’ gets to have hundreds of bases and lillypads all over the eastern hemisphere. But God damn any other country that so much as tries to fly a military aircraft right near their own sovereign territory!

Umm – is that the same Alaska from which a certain U.S. vice president candidate could actually see Russia?

Ha, ha! Good ole Sarah. I remember her saying that she could actually see “Putin rearing his head” from her window. I like that. Rearing his head–as though he were a giant cobra!

The ‘far beyond borders’ part was correct. They just “forgot” who was beyond whose borders. It comes from the same playbook that allows them to “remember” that Assad is responsible for all the murder and vandalism perpetrated by Obama and KSA’s mercenaries in Syria.

It’s a strategic error. Russia and China, even though at some odds in their relationship, will strengthen their alliance merely out of survival instincts.
BRICS is the key. TTIP is their only rational response, but it is tumescent.

Washington Post’s Imperial Newspeak basically says that the US has the inherent right to send her aircraft wherever she likes whenever she feels like it. Doesn’t the rest of the world know her area of influence extends to that of the vicinity of other nations 8 to 10,000+ miles from her borders??
As such, the aircraft of the nations in question had better move out of the way, even if they are on or very near their own home turf. If we decide it is in our backyard, then we have a God-given right to be there.
Classic US double-standard. Act like it’s 1946 and everyone is still leveled by the war.

Posted by: Farflungstar | Oct 5 2014 15:27 utc | 8

The U.S. justifies its global military presence, especially naval, by claiming that it is securing the global commons. From the most recent Pentagon published a Defense priorities document:

To enable economic growth and commerce, America, working in conjunction with allies and partners around the world, will seek to protect freedom of access throughout the global commons – those areas beyond national jurisdiction that constitute the vital connective tissue of the international system. Global security and prosperity are increasingly dependent on the free flow of goods shipped by air or sea. State and non-state actors pose potential threats to access in the global commons, whether through opposition to existing norms or other anti-access approaches.

So according to this rationale the U.S. is protecting shipping, mostly to and from China, in the China Seas from threats by … whom? Pirates?
And does China say thank you, American taxpayers, for protecting our shipping in the China Seas, the Persian Gulf and elsewhere?
No. China is thankless for this service, and in fact harasses US warships in the South China Sea. No gratitude.

Russian Bombers Fly Within 50 Miles of California Coast

Four Russian strategic bombers triggered U.S. air defense systems while conducting practice bombing runs near Alaska this week, with two of the Tu-95 Bear H aircraft coming within 50 miles of the California coast, the North American Aerospace Defense Command (Norad) confirmed Wednesday.
“The last time we saw anything similar was two years ago on the Fourth of July,” Navy Capt. Jeff Davis, a Norad spokesman, told the Free Beacon.
Davis said the latest Bear H incursions began Monday around 4:30 p.m. Pacific time when radar detected the four turbo-prop powered bombers approaching the U.S. air defense zone near the far western Aleutian Islands.
Two U.S. Air Force F-22 jets were scrambled and intercepted the bombers over the Aleutians.
After tracking the bombers as they flew eastward, two of the four Bears turned around and headed west toward the Russian Far East. The bombers are believed to be based at the Russian strategic base near Anadyr, Russia.
The remaining two nuclear-capable bombers then flew southeast and around 9:30 P.M. entered the U.S. northern air defense zone off the coast of Northern California.
Two U.S. F-15 jets were deployed and intercepted the bombers as they eventually flew within 50 miles of the coast before turning around and heading west.
A defense official said the four bombers also were supported by two IL-78 aerial refueling tankers that were used for mid-air refueling during the operation this week.

The Russian bombers that came within 50 miles of California were on a training run, Fast Freddy. A training run to drop nuclear bombs on your kid’s head. I guess you’d welcome that as understandable and justifiable Blowback, and hey, look on the bright side — should Russia decide to go through with it, your kid won’t have to deal with the chastisement for not saying the Pledge of Allegiance.

The question arises- what choice do China, Russia, et al have at this point? Ulsan Gunnar has a good piece on this at New Asia Times:
While in theory the UN is supposed to be an impartial arbiter of international law, through clearly biased actions it is revealed to be a subject to certain special interests, merely using the pretext of human rights and international law to selectively advance the agenda of certain member states while ignoring entirely such principles when convenient.
In Syria, US bombs are now killing Syrian civilians, destroying infrastructure and all while violating the sovereignty of the nation of Syria itself. The act of military aggression the US and its partners are exercising in Syria run contrary to the UN Charter itself and constitute a grave infraction of international law. When the UN ponders the steady erosion of its legitimacy, popularity and effectiveness, it is displays of double standards like those seen in Syria that are the cause.
Likewise, in Ukraine, where ultra-right militants espousing Nazism are openly carrying out human rights violations so often and overtly that even the European-aligned OSCE must report them all while the UN remains utterly silent and flaccid, undermines not only the UN itself, but the concept of international law altogether.
When international law is cited and enforced selectively by certain member states of the United Nations, using the UN itself as a platform to legitimize otherwise illegal actions, the world teeters on the edge of global lawlessness leaving the remaining members of the UN to ponder alternatives in resolving injustices perpetuated rather than challenged by the UN and its Charter.
Eastern Ukrainians, the Syrians and all their respective allies are left with little other choice than to act unilaterally themselves to defend their territory and people as well as their interests in the face of rogue nations that have apparently co-opted and now control much of the UN.

A nuclear explosion is the only thing that will penetrate the Amerikan dunderheads and their inexplicable ability to understand that if you are gonna do something that can be taken as threatening, provocative and dangerous, you can’t whinge and cry like a little twat when someone else follows suit. (Albeit FAR less aggressively Orwellian and murderous than Amerika – takes little to send the pampered USian elites into hysterics these days – as well as deliberately contrarian wingnuts with blogs no one reads.)
Everyone is tired of the blatant double standards. And after the Amerikan Uber Death Party in the Middle East with Iraq, Libya, and now Syria, all in defense/complicity of the shitbag JSIL settler colony and repressive KSA dicks, you do not have the moral high ground you once did. When you cry, “Hey! We’re the only ones allowed to do that!” Not everyone pays attention now.
You can’t be a hypocrite forever and expect to be taken seriously, especially when your leaders and their defenders act like a bunch of spoiled snot-nose kids who want ALL the toys in the sandbox for himself, not just his own.

If you want to understand what’s going on – see this presentation:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZTC_RxWN_xo
Right at around 41 minute mark: 23 US planes shot down by the Russians (and over 200 airmen lost) because they were deliberately intruding into Soviet airspace in order to force air defense radars to kick off – thus enabling mapping of air defense networks for potential future attack.
A more detailed list: http://theminiaturespage.com/boards/msg.mv?id=258352
Another list of incidents: http://www.spyflight.co.uk/main.htm
Resident troll morons to the contrary – there ain’t no good guys here.
The US is constantly intruding into other nations’ airspace precisely in order to get air defense radars turned on so that the strength of these systems can be evaluated, and planning performed for future attacks. The Russians returning the favor – but clearly at a far lower level of effort.

@Vintage Red #36:
US diplomacy’s preferred baseline year is 1991. In 1946, the world was bipolar (no pun intended); in 1991, it became monopolar. American foreign policy types consider Russia to be a revisionist state, which doesn’t make any sense if you take 1946 as the baseline.

Subject: Parasyuk
Pankevich to Filatov:
“No, it is not all, Boris. Your idiots slaughtered 37 civilians, 19 of them were Jews! And you know where I got such a detailed information? Yesterday night somebody dug out the garbage bags and boxes with the remains of all those 37 people! You know me well, I would not have mind, if all 37 had been Jews, but do you realise, that this kind of Mini-Holocaust that your fighters committed will not die down in time? Do you have an idea how to move it ahead and present to the public? Didn’t you have enough trouble with the Trade Union Building (May 2, Odessa—edit.), did you? Do you realise that it was not some mushroom hunters, who found the mass grave? That there was a certain person who pointed out those bags and boxes? Give it a thought, my dear Boris, either nobody recognized your guy in captivity (Parasyuk is one of most visible members of Kolomoisky mercenaries, captured but claimed to be able to escape because nobody recognized him—edit.), or he sang to them like a nightingale while in captivity. Please, be so kind to make sure that your Parasyuk will not come close to our current affairs. Only God knows, what kind of person he became after captivity.”

Officer of a reconnaissance platoon, nicknamed “Shaman”, informs about situation on the front:

As once more was confirmed, the “military market (or mall)” (combatants’ logistics) is closed. Obtaining ammo has become a serious issue. Anti-tank means, while available, are efficient on old models of armored hardware. APCs upgraded by grids present a serious problem. Combatants complain of shortage of tandem ammo. They note same low quality of anti-tank means as it was in Slavyansk.

The enemy forces are echeloned in attack configuration – concentration of armored hardware in area Kurakhovo-Mar`inka and Karlovka-Avdeevka-Peski. The attack is expected from south-west and north-west (Monday-Tuesday?). Up to 40 tanks and 10 thousand infantry. Near Avdeevka – “Grads”, “Uragans”, “D-30s” – overall quantity is several tens. Under Mar`inka – battery of “Grads”… Total number of artillery systems is up to 90. Significant ammo quantity is stocked for offense. Dislocated in Krasnogorovka are up to 3 thousand of infantry + tanks and APCs.
Yesterday, artillery of “Khmuriy” (Chief of Reconnaissance of Donetsk Republic, general-major Petrovskiy) together with battalion “Kal`mius” (special unit consisting of miners) in retaliatory strike on positions of junta forces destroyed and damaged up to 20 tanks, 5 “Uragans”, killed and wounded several tens of personnel. Thus, mounting of enemy storm groups is being disturbed.

Newspapers we thought to be all about thoughts and ideas now march in lock-step with politicians in their calls for sanctions against Russia’s President Putin. Even the headlines betray an aggressive tension as is usually characteristic of hooligans when they ‘support’ their respective teams.
The Tagesspiegel: “Enough talk!“ The FAZ: “Show strength“. The Süddeutsche Zeitung: “Now or never.“ The Spiegel calls for an “End to cowardice“: “Putin’s web of lies, propaganda, and deception has been exposed. The wreckage of MH 17 is also the result of a crashed diplomacy.“
Western politics and German media agree.

Every mistake starts with a mistake in thinking. And we are making this mistake if we believe that only the other party profits from our economic relationship and thus will suffer when this relationship stops. If economic ties were maintained for mutual profit, then severing them will lead to mutual loss. Punishment and self-punishment are the same thing in this case.
Even the idea that economic pressure and political isolation would bring Russia to its knees was not really thought all the way through. Even if we could succeed: what good would Russia be on its knees?

Proshenko offers the parliament to pass a law of revised constituents of Lugansk region.
Cities beyond Lugansk Republic will be incorporated in other Ukrainian regions.

The representative of the President of Ukraine in the Supreme Rada (the Ukrainian parliament) Ruslan Knyazevich noted necessity of reviewing the issue, because certain parts of Lugansk region remain partially governed by the state authority. “To properly govern such territories, to guarantee functioning of their infrastructure, it is necessary to change borders of the Lugansk territories and join them with regions that we control.” – said Knyazevich.
According to him, the proposed law was discussed and is supported by all parliament factions and the speaker of the Supreme Rada.
