Moon of Alabama Brecht quote

The Empire’s Forked Tongue On Sanctions

With regard to U.S. sanctions on gasoline on Iran:

Obama said the new sanctions were the toughest ever passed by the U.S. Congress and would make it harder for Iran to buy refined petroleum as well as goods and services to modernize its oil and natural gas sector, the mainstay of its economy.
Obama says new U.S. sanctions on Iran toughest ever, Reuters, July2 2010

With regard to Iran’s sanctions on gasoline exports on U.S.-Afghanistan:

QUESTION: Some kind of economic tension is brewing up between Afghanistan and Iran. Iran has blocked the supply of gas to Afghanistan, which has led to increasing gas prices and shortages of gas in Afghanistan. What do you have to say about that – on that?

MR. CROWLEY: I mean, we are watching closely that development. Energy is a critical resource to any country and any economy, and it should be available at whatever the appropriate market price is.

Question: What will the U.S. say when Iran is successful with its current engineering of a democratic(!) regime change in Lebanon?

Now that Caribou Barbie has spectacularly flamed-out… Murdoch is now promoting(literally)his next candidate…
A Fifth Star for David Petraeus
The general clearly deserves to join the rank held by MacArthur, Marshall and Nimitz. His promotion would also honor our troops and their mission in the war on terror.
Adds a whole new dimension to the Army’s ‘F*ck Up, Move Up’ adage…! *gah*

Hasn’t the US always held a “do as I say, not as I do” stance on nearly every aspect of its policies?

I don’t think Helena Cobban is right about that. At least there’s no evidence that Hizbullah are going on the offensive. The evidence for the moment remains consistent with the idea that the resignation was intended to block the indictments at the Hague. Which is an offensive move by the US.

alexno, possibly she means because iran supports hezbollah in the same way we support lebanese security forces and the western backed government there. could hezbollah sustain itself without that support? i question that myself because it does have the support of the majority of the people so maybe it could. but when we fund, empower and support politicians to get them in power isn’t it fair to say we are engineering the regime? and the regime has been transformed by hezbollah certainly not from western backing.

another thing, the israeli spy scandal and it’s outing was very much a joint effort by lebanese security forces and hezbollah. it brought them together. it was a coup of sorts, one that didn’t please US/IS.
