Moon of Alabama Brecht quote

Khodorkovskiy Is Guilty

One wonders why exactly "western" media and politicians are up in arms about the new guilty verdict against the former Russian oligarch Mikhail Khodorkovsky.

The man, as most of the other oligarchs, is of course guilty of stealing the Russian natural riches from the Russian people, of tax evasion and even more serious criminal stuff. The "western" media know this.

Even a cable from the Moscow embassy reported that the first trial against him was went as it should:

An observer for the International Bar Association stated his belief that the trial is being conducted fairly.

The first judgment against Khodorkovsky as well as the current second one are fair, legal and just.

What irks the "west" is that especially those oligarchs opposed to the democratically elected Putin administration ran into trouble. Says the cable:

It is not lost on either elite or mainstream Russians that the GOR has applied a double standard to the illegal activities of 1990s oligarchs; if it were otherwise, virtually every other oligarch would be on trial alongside Khodorkovskiy and Lebedev. There is a widespread understanding that Khodorkovskiy violated the tacit rules of the game: if you keep out of politics, you can line your pockets as much as you desire.

The "western" elites hate democracy. They had hoped to have an authoritarian Khodorkovsky as the head of Russia. A criminal, like Jelzin, who would sell out the Russian resources for nothing but some handsome bribes.

Unfortunately for them, democracy still rules in Russia. Unlike the people of the United States, who's  government in Washington is wholesome owned by Wall Street, the Russians, even while tolerating some stealing, will still fight against being also ruled by those thieves.

Comments

I would not say that ‘democracy rules in Russia’, just that the Western media points out Putin’s government’s authoritarian thuggishness so much because they are not banana republicans. A Khodorkovsky government’s authoritarian thuggishness would not be so pointed out.

khodorkovsky was apparently allied with the AEI/PNAC/exxon neocons, who were counting on russian oil to tide them over while they remodeled the middle east oil patch during the 9-11/PNAC/”war on terror” project.
most of the yukos guys fled to israel after the crackdown, including nevzlin, who’s apparently a murderer… but he was nevertheless welcomed to israel… and the white house.
meanwhile, as the crackdown progressed, khodorkovsky tried to sell yukos to the AEI neocons’ partner, exxon… lee raymond was CEO of exxon at the time, and also vice chairman of the board of the AEI.

security for israel, oil for exxon: US taxpayers foot the bill
it’s no secret that the israelis have been pushing for reassembly of the middle east for decades, and it seems reasonable to assume that israel -located as it is adjacent to the world’s biggest oil patch- would not be nearly as important to america if america were not so dependent on oil…. for instance, if america was supplying itself with electricity from nuke plants built and operated by exxon, fueled with uranium from exxon mines.
if exxon had continued with its nuke development, maybe some of us americans would be driving electric cars by now…
…but once exxon became aware of israeli americans’ determination to thwart development of nuke plants, once exxon became aware of the power of the israeli american media, once exxon became aware of israeli and israeli american determination to remodel the middle east, exxon gave up on their nukes and joined up with the israeli americans in their land and oil acquisition project.
since the american taxpayer would be footing the bill for the project -at a time when oil is getting scarce and exploration and production costs are soaring- an alliance with the israeli americans and their PNAC project is the cheapest way for exxon to grab a chunk of the biggest oil reserves in the world.
putin put a huge lump in this whole dismal operation by reclaiming russian energy from the bandits who stole it as the soviet union collapsed.
the neocons will never forgive putin for that, which accounts for the everlasing vilification of putin.
for a history of exxon’s progress from full-tilt nuke power provider, through abandonment of nuke power, to partnership in the AEI/PNAC project, read comments here.

Listen to Mark Ames, the author of “The Exile: Sex, Drugs, and Libel in the New Russia,” give his account of what it was like to live in Russia when Larry Summers was Yeltsin’s Economic Hitman in Chief (listen to link below) and you’ll know that Larry Summers, who was acting as Obama’s Economic Hitman in Chief, has helped to spawn a new breed of American oligarchs that make our turn-of-the-century robber barons look like latter-day Robin Hoods! Larry Summers has helped our new American oligarchs strip us of our social safety net and shrink our middle class down to a size where they can drown it in Grover Norquist’s bathtub, just as he helped the Russian oligarchs do to the Russian people and their middle class several decades ago.

Then we learn from Glenn Greenwald (read link below) that Cass Sunstein, who’s acting as Obama’s Judicial Hitman in Chief, wants to take our Bill of Rights and turn it into chopped liver so that he and his fascist friends can enjoy munching on it between two slices of rye bread! In fact, he is such an enemy to our Constitutional Rights that he makes Anthony Scalia look like a civil libertarian!

Putting this all together, Team Obama can best be described as the embodiment of what Naomi Klein describes as “disaster capitalism.” Make no mistake, Obama is a disaster capitalist’s fantasy come true.

Be that as it may, I’m glad that the nuclear infrastructure in the USA is no bigger than it is, and nowhere near as big as was once projected or still sometimes called for; because the safety assurances assume that there will always be socio-political stability and that assumption is dumb.

cynthia, thank you for the antiwar/mark ames tape… too bad those boys couldnt screw up a little more courage …they seem to know what’s going on, but they seemed to avoid mentioning some aspects.
cloud says…

“…I’m glad that the nuclear infrastructure in the USA is no bigger than it is…”

i bet the americans will use everything available (nukes, coal, whatever… and nevermind the co2 or gamma rays) to preserve their system as long as possible… “the american way is not negotiable.”
the economy that supports the military that protects israel must continue to function long enough for israel to complete its ethnic cleansing of the high ground in the west bank…
theoretically…
in the meantime, the looters (larry summers and the people scott horton and mark ames were talking about in cynthia’s tape) could give a fig about america, israel or anything other than loot, and you can damn well bet that they know that america’s days are numbered because of its dependence on cheap oil.
it always boils down to the same old thing: we simply dont know how many of the neocons are really zionists, and how many are only using israel for cover.
that’s got to be worrisome to israeli zionists… assuming they’re not in on the gag.

“…and he’d be a helluva lot better man if he’d left russian oil in the hands of russian neocons…”
is that your point?

Posted by: flickervertigo | Dec 28 2010 3:26 utc | 8

@flickervertigo
You have made your point about “israeli zionists”. Readers here know I support the Palestinians. But I doubt the whole American military/industrial economy is being given life support just long enough to overrun the high ground on the West Bank.

I would put it like this: “The best laid plans of mice & men …”

Posted by: Rick Happ | Dec 28 2010 3:35 utc | 10

there’s lots of factions, not least of which are fat, dumb, happy americans who havent figured out what’s going on… but they like uniforms a lot, and the flag, too… and even television and lady gaga.
then there are the deathwish christians, who will probably figure out, sooner or later, that they’ve got to support israel while turning “antisemitic” in the states, the better to herd jews to israel for the final showdown.
but you have to admit that the american media, aka “the powers that be” according to david halberstam, seems to be supportive of israel.
halberstam didnt call them “the powers that be” on a whim.

I would put it like this: “The best laid plans of mice & men …”

if you’re only in it for the money, and that was the plan from the start, and you’re sucking trillions out of the american economy, i dont see where those plans are gang agley.

Posted by: flickervertigo | Dec 28 2010 3:39 utc | 12

The neocon plans have been a complete disaster. The elite may not admit it, but they know it, the American people know it, and the World knows it. No amount of money will stop the surprises to come.

Posted by: Rick Happ | Dec 28 2010 4:01 utc | 13

“No amount of money will stop the surprises to come.”

nope, but what do you care about surprises once you’ve got a couple tons of gold stuffed in the gulfstream and you’re halfway to paraguay?
you got a scorecard handy? …because sometimes i cant tell whether a guy is a neocon, or a plain vanilla looter.

Posted by: flickervertigo | Dec 28 2010 4:22 utc | 14

of course, if you’re “surprised” before takeoff, that’s something else, isnt it?
nevzlin, according to russian courts, “surprised” five guys before he himself finally winged off into the israeli sunset.
we’ll know we’re making headway when american looters start shooting each other, wont we?

Posted by: flickervertigo | Dec 28 2010 4:51 utc | 15

i bet the americans will use everything available (nukes, coal, whatever… and nevermind the co2 or gamma rays) to preserve their system as long as possible… “the american way is not negotiable.”
True. Which is why I’ll be doing my best in the coming years to enjoy the beautiful parts of Utah which have oil shale under them, ’cause their days are numbered. No environmental catastrophe is too great for The American Way Of Life.

Speaking of Putin, anybody else find this interesting?
Putin Loves Linux, Orders Government Transition to Open Source
in juxtaposition to this..
When using open source makes you an enemy of the state

The US copyright lobby has long argued against open source software – now Indonesia’s in the firing line for encouraging the idea in government departments

I’m not sure of the specifications, but that’s quite a payload for a long flight, and about halfway to Paraguay, the passengers and crew may be in for a surprise.
Never flew on a Gulfstream jet, but when working in the Fortune 500 corporate world, I was once the Captain on one of our corporate jets. It was a Sabreliner – the ‘Cadillac’ (back then) of small jets. I felt real important when the pilot asked me when I wanted to take off. We got home early of course – I never did take my job serious enough.

yup, you might have to make a couple pit stops.
