RE the rising oil prices due to unregulated speculation. A nice example of how lack of government regulation allows the financial industry to function in governments place – collecting what is a de-facto “tax” on gasoline consumption, a “tax” revenue from the people without their consent, to Wall Street instead of the government of the people. When government fails to mediate the other powers that be, those other powers replace government and define the laws of the land.

We had that here in the Middle Rhine, there was no government to regulate trade and transportation, so the Robber Barons collected their tolls, which usually wound up totalling 70% of the value of any wares brought along the forty-mile stretch between Coblenz and Bingen.

Ritual Defamation An important idea.

On: 4 accused of bombing plot of Bronx synagoges.
All the hype about anti-semitism creates a self fulfilling prophecy, as kooks who want to pose as victims realise that to get media attention there is only one way to go.
I have in mind two women, the first on a train in France, the second in the main station of Geneva, who simulated aggressions on themselves, with for the first only swastikas carved on her body, the second the same with an added flip – the loss of twins in the station toilet!
(Fetal deaths are usually aimed at a US audience. Note also the spots chosen, very public, very policed, huge audience, having the added connotation of public space not being safe..)
The second was Brazilian (neither were Jewish afaik), and this story created a shit storm in Brasil and was a heavy diplomatic incident, because the Geneva police refused to accredit the story, ‘held back information’, ‘were uncooperative’, ‘tried to hide things’ then ‘were lying’, etc. The French girl created a hullaballo as well with all the French pols coming out saying they were considering sending anti-semites to jail for the duration, etc.
Both were obvious fakes, right from the start. Witness testimony of suspicious details was supressed. But the media storm, the attention, the care that must be taken, the encouragement from powerful ppl see to it that such stories get world coverage, and then ,,, nobody remembers, or even is informed, of the end of the story, the unwinding. Brasil for ex offered an official apology to Switz. (iirc.)
I don’t know why they bother setting up more false flags… I guess there is a market for that kind of thing, instigators willing pay, and very poor ppl willing to risk a tremendous amount for ready cash, approval, belonging, a position, become terrorists, so to speak, persons of some importance, actors on the world stage. The fact that there aren’t more, and each incident is hyped up beyond all belief, is quite comforting.

here we go again:
about last October, Obama talked about re-imposing regulations & reporting rules (ref energy exchanges NYMEX & ICE) that were lifted towards the end of the Clinton term. The result as expected was that speculators (& manipulators) started to take their money out of the market. Oil futures take a few months to unwind & along with reduced global economic demand for energy, prices collapsed over the next few months.
well, so far nothing has been done by the Obama admin to tighten rules & close loopholes that allow Big-Oil & Big-Bank to make massive unreported trades on a level that totally defeats the purpose of energy-exchanges as arbiters of demand & supply.
speculators have to be a step ahead of everyone else and if they are talking-up inflation, they may know something we do’nt. It really does’nt matter as inflation was not a factor in the last bubble. They just need a good prop.
Its too early to assign any blame on OPEC as prices are still relatively low and supply is still high even though OPEC (&non OPEC) producers have had to dramatically cut production over the last six months or they would have had to start giving it away free. Theres a very hard limit on how much oil can be warehoused by producers and national-reserves. However, in a few months, OPEC will be tarred & feathered again and denounced all over again as public-enemy-number-1 for not ramping up production fast enough. But its a small price to pay for the profits OPEC is going to make despite the cost of expensive yoyo production turnarounds compelled by market speculators/manipulators and also to a much lesser extent by the summers heat. Because speculators & manipulators do’nt get paid unless Big-Oil & OPEC get paid.
theres really no excuse for this “lapse” by Obama’s admin unless they think the net combined effect of increased consumer spending on energy & massive increased profits for Big-Bank & Big-Oil will help pick-up the economy. Still what this amounts to is that the govt is regulating the bubble and not the market.

Listening this morning to the Voice of Israel… or was it NPR? Hard to tell the difference these days. They were yammering on and on about the four Very Bad Men who were gonna blow Judaism to hell; the radio propagandist went on and on about how these four had a surface to air missile and also left “explosives” in front of a temple…
Sickos to be sure, but are these four really anti-semite or were they tricked into this plot by the FBI “informant” ?
There is a backlash brewing to these reports… I don’t know how or when, but the public is gonna get sick hearing about anti-semitism when most americans have so many more pressing problems to address, and when that happens, hold-on ’cause hell hath no fury like pissed-off poor people.
I don’t doubt there is plenty of anti-semitism in the world… but there is a hell of a lot more racism against people of color than there are against Jews… What is worse; being hated for your skin color or for your religious practices? (I suppose Jews fall under both, but I doubt there are many in the US who haven’t been hired ’cause of their skin color)
Black americans are the folks who should be really pissed-off about this crap. Years since slavery was abolished and Blacks are still taking it in the hindquarters from white america… Blacks are about 13% of the United States population… Jews are about 1.7% – who do you think suffers more from “hate” crimes?
Oy Vey!
The way AIPAC is heading, soon anti-semitism will be defined as the breathing of air by any non-jew…

If you liked Iraq war and its consequences, and you want to have a rerun of it: Harman’s plan for the disintegration of Iran.

@1, @5, begging your pardon but for little squirts like us commodities are not speculation but vital hedging. As the OECD goes broker and broker, increasingly imminent inflation has to be hedged. The traditional way of doing that was with your high-geared house but that’s over so now Grandma’s widow’s mite will naturally include a bit of DBE on margin. You don’t want Grandma eating dog food, Do you?

I need a personal favour from everyone. Would you kindly sign the following Petition against the statements of Congresswoman Jane Harman who publicly called for the Balkanization and partitioning of Iran?
Many Americans have already signed and found her comments despicable.

The link to Laird Wilcox’s Ritual Defamation by #3 is well worth reading. Timing seems to be everything with these set-up terror plots.

Reading this story is another reminder of how far our FBI is willing to go to generate news stories to enhance their public image. This whole sad tale is very obviously another example of the FBI creating a “cell” from a group of not very smart or capable petty criminals, who would never have come together for any so-called terrorist purpose without the aggressive leadership of FBI “cooperator”, who acquired the fake weapons, and even drove the “terrorists” to their targets. Despicable. As is the behavior of the public officials who are preening in front of tv cameras praising law enforcement for the entrapment.

I think I have a *huge* misunderstanding about energy (oil) futures and speculation.
I am under the impression (correct me if I’m wrong) that a bet on the future price of a commodity is not the same as actually buying/owning the commodity in the future.
In other words, If b and I were to bet (speculate) in some way on the future price of oil, are we actually buying the product, too? Or is the speculation little more than a side-bet?
Is an oil ‘future’ a bet, a purchase? A promise to purchase?

david
yes it is another story of happy mutual infantilism between the incompetens who have no intention of any action – organised or otherwise & the childish conspiratorial activity of security beaurecrats
it is as absurd as it read like the so called liberty tower conspiracy
it is yet more proof if proof is needed that political islam is neither capable nor wants any armed action & that ought to be good news for the empire & its minions but on the contrary it gets in the way of the demonisation if islam & of the real thwarting of islam’s real political initiatives
as i sd in another post i don’t see any essential difference between the salafists & western security apparatus – for me they are one & the same thing

Posted by: remembereringgiap | May 21 2009 18:53 utc | 16

@Jeremiah @14 – it is a bet. But commodity bets have the the “side effect” of influencing the real price at the pump.
I argue for taking the “bets” out of the future market and only allow future contracts with real (commodity) delivery and acceptance.

On the local NYC 11pm news last night, the (literally breathless) reporter was reading from the FBI and DOJ press releases, but still did some actual questioning on video.
Can’t recall if it was FBI, DOJ, or NYPD spokesperson, but the reporter asked if the alleged terrorists were knowledgeable enough to know the fake explosives were not real, and the answer was no, they did not.
I wonder who came up with the actual idea, who built the bombs, or supplied the detonators, etc.
But the term “homegrown terrorists” was everywhere last night, including comments by Sen. Chuck Schumer. The perps were identified as “recent converts to radical Islam” with no connections to Al Qaeda. The ostensible leader was said to be very angry about the high numbers of civilian deaths in Afghanistan; he possibly has family in Afghanistan, but that was not certain.
The plot was also allowed to “ripen” to the point of the Newburgh Four (not sure that will be the MCM name or not) parking the cars filled with what they thought were explosives outside two synagogues in the Bronx. On a Tuesday, when few people would be there, interestingly. So, this will make prosecution much easier: It’s not just thought, but actions.
In the Sears Tower case, it took three trials and a change of venue to get the guilty verdicts. It was so obvious the guys from Liberty City were just so inept and dirt poor and lead by the nose. Didn’t matter to the Illinois jury, the third try.
Timing seems quite convenient as well….

Guantanamo ‘recidivism’ – it seems, yet again, that there is huge exaggeration of the return of Guantanamo releasees to ‘terrorism’.
The NYT article details evidence at the end, of 2 named people, and possibly 3 more, out of 534 released – that’s under 1% compared with 68% recidivism accepted as normal in the US itself.
Dammit, these people (nearly 800 of them – 534 released, 240 still in the hell-hole) were supposedly picked up on the battlefield, resisting US invasion (but more probably sold to the US by collaborators). If they were subject to the SOP of Guantanamo, then I am sure they’d be resentful, and want revenge.
So, I’m surprised that 99% of them have not returned to fight the invaders..

Posted by: Richard | May 22 2009 1:43 utc | 20

New York 4 –
This is so blatantly a sting operation, so perhaps the only question oustanding is – why the timing of the release?
If a smart FBI officer could convince these poor sucker patsies to plant fake bombs (with his materials) then:
– who told them to plant them outside synagogues? Go on, guess.
– why isn’t the FBI officer in court to answer charges of conspiracy?

Posted by: Richard | May 22 2009 2:00 utc | 22

Richard-
I wonder how many of these sorts of patsies the officials have under surveillance at any given time?
Isn’t it convenient that the media always seems to have the perfect fall-guy? How many crazy shooting were being reported while gun legislation was being debated?
And I better not get started on 9/11…
