My absolute favorite part of this was the WaPo link at the end, specifically, at the bottom of the paper’s site is the text: From our partner The Onion.
Lord you just really can’t tell anymore, can ya?
thank you, b.

“The Onion” really hit its peak with the headline last November:
“Black Man Given America’s Worst Job”

By the way, the “more expensive” link above looks like it’s broken.
Apologies if someone’s already shared it, but Lawrence of Cyberia is in the midst of an apparently neverending series (22 entries so far) based around those IDF T-shirts that have been making the rounds. The first one’s here.
And then if you need it, a chaser here.

@Quin – thanks, link corrected and also thanks for the LoC link.

“b”,
I just want to say thanks. I read every day, but don’t often make a comment. Your site is my first stop each day.

Agent Orange. Christ. This news is punching through my “outrage fatigue”. How can that even be considered? Pure Evil…

Posted by: Cloud | Mar 25 2009 15:33 utc | 6

Okay, so it’s not actually Agent Orange (it’s another broad-spectrum herbicide), but the principle is the same.

your guns-and-nuts post sounds like somebody in the government has realized that all those firearms out there could lead to some serious problems in the aftermath of a natural or man-made disaster in the USA.

in my state i don’t know why i read the books i do – but i have been rereading two books(english books here expensive & in this time a sufficiently rare commodity) about the truth & reconciliation commission in south africa – ‘ the country of my skull’ & another more or less covering the same period
& the parallel with israel & its brutality & its use of a ‘third force’ is truly frightening – the mirroring of the stories that are now comin out of israel – leave no doubt about the exactness of the parallel

Tim Geithner seems really prone to screw things up. Sending the dollar down 1.3% in 10 minutes is not a easy feat:
Geithner Remarks on IMF Roil Foreign-Exchange Market (Update1)

Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner sent the dollar tumbling with comments about China’s ideas for overhauling the global monetary system, only to drive it back up by affirming that it should remain the world’s reserve currency.
Geithner was initially asked at a Council on Foreign Relations event in New York about proposals from People’s Bank of China Governor Zhou Xiaochuan for a new international reserve currency. He said “as I understand his proposal, it’s a proposal designed to increase the use of the IMF’s special drawing rights. And we’re actually quite open to that.”
The dollar slid as much as 1.3 percent against the euro within 10 minutes of news accounts of Geithner’s remarks. The U.S. currency was down 0.6 percent at $1.3553 as of 12:31 p.m. in New York.
Roger Altman, who worked with Geithner as deputy Treasury secretary in the Clinton administration, later asked Geithner whether he wanted to “clarify” his remarks.
“I’d like to ask one final question, in effect on behalf of the market,” said Altman, founder of Evercore Partners Inc. “Let me ask the question this way. Do you see any change over the foreseeable future in the basic role of the dollar as the world’s key reserve currency?”
‘Strong’ Dollar
Geithner responded by saying that “I think the dollar remains the world’s dominant reserve currency.” In an interview with CNBC broadcast after the event, the Treasury chief said that a “strong dollar” is in “America’s interest.”

Looks like LoC has consolidated all 29 posts in her series under one index. For those who want a piece of light reading before bedtime.

d.13 I’ve been told (by the local preacher) Obama’s coming for my guns, but I just laugh at such talk. Anyone who wants my weapons will have to help me get rid of several thousand rounds of ammo first.

Posted by: Jim T. | Mar 26 2009 2:45 utc | 15

Jim T, I don’t doubt that 🙂
I don’t even think the story is completely accurate, though there are plenty of other scary reasons to worry about our gun rights.
You can tell your preacher that unless Obama is magical, like santa claus, he’d have a hard time going house to house gathering guns…
I don’t have any guns myself, well not fire arms, I do have a couple of fun pellet rifles to keep my shooting sharp.
I’m all for other people having guns though. Here are several good reasons why guns can be good
I understand that guns aren’t for everyone, and that’s fine. But in america it’s good to know enough about handling a weapon so that if you happen upon one, you won’t hurt yourself or someone else.

d.13 8) H-1388 GIVE Corps – Who is “The Corporation”? e.g. “The Corporation, in consultation with the Secretary of Education, may make allotments to State educational agencies, Territories, and Indian tribes to pay for the Federal share of…”
and
“To the extent practicable, the Corporation shall give special consideration to applications submitted by predominantly Black institutions, Historically Black Colleges and Universities, Hispanic-serving institutions, Tribal Colleges and Universities, and community colleges serving predominantly minority populations…”
What, Asians aren’t minorities?
“‘(A) IN GENERAL- The term ‘eligible partnership’ means–
‘(i) one or more community-based agencies that have demonstrated records of success in carrying out service-learning programs with disadvantaged students, and that meet such criteria as the Chief Executive Officer may establish; in combination with;
‘(ii) (I) one or more local educational agencies for which–
‘(aa) a high number or percentage of the students served by the agency, as determined by the Corporation, are disadvantaged students; and
‘(bb) the graduation rate for the secondary school students served by the agency is less than 70 percent;
So to get GIVE funding, you have to be “successful” with disadvantaged students, provided you are not so “successful” you’ve graduated more than 3/4th’s of them? And the “Chief Executive Officer” can waive all those standards at his whim?
Who is the “Chief Executive Office” who can waive all these requirements? Brown’y?

your link describes individuals defending themselves against attackers and criminals.
I think the scenario that is bothering the government is the thought of massed armed uprisings following some sort of natural or man-made disaster (or combination thereof, such as Hurricane Katrina) which could quickly get out of hand, especially once all those guns in Mexico start drifting across an already porous border, one that could cease to function entirely if things go South…

Posted by: ralphieboy | Mar 26 2009 8:16 utc | 18

@ralphieboy –
especially once all those guns in Mexico start drifting across an already porous border, one that could cease to function entirely if things go South…
The guns used in Mexico’s drug fights come from the U.S. – no need to smuggle them into the U.S. – to use them as you do to stir up fear in the U.S. is quite some bullshitting.

U.S. shares blame for Mexico drug violence, Clinton says

In candid comments aimed at reassuring a sensitive neighbor, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton accepted Wednesday that the United States shares blame for Mexico’s drug violence, and promised more equipment and support to help the country’s war against traffickers.
Clinton said the U.S. has a duty to help since it is a major consumer of illicit drugs and a key supplier of weapons smuggled to cartel hit men.

Thanks b, I was gonna say the same thing.
Here is another interesting gun link from WRH about a weapons shipment, supposedly from Turkey but discovered in Kansas City…
Hmmm who’d need a bunch of weapons without serial numbers?
