Haaretz’ Editorial Lies

So far I thought of Haaretz as a relatively reasonable Israeli newspaper. I herewith officially change that judgement.

On April 7 2008 Haaretz reported:

Minister of National Infrastructures and former defense minister Benjamin Ben-Eliezer sent Iran a warning Monday, saying "an Iranian attack on Israel will lead to a harsh response by Israel that will cause the destruction of the Iranian nation."
Ben-Eliezer: If Iran attacks Israel, we will destroy it

On April 15 2008 Haaretz reported:

Iran’s Deputy Chief of Staff Mohammed Rada Ashtiani was quoted earlier by the semi-official Iranian news agency Mehr as saying: "If Israel wants to take any action against the Islamic Republic, we will eliminate Israel from the scene of the universe… Our answer to any military attack against Iran will be strong."

The Iranian officer’s comments came after Minister of National Infrastructures Benjamin Ben-Eliezer last week warned Iran that "an Iranian attack on Israel will lead to a harsh response by Israel that will cause the destruction of the Iranian nation."
U.S.: Iranian threats to ‘eliminate’ Israel justify int’l sanctions

In today’s edition, the main Haaretz Editorial is changing the above timeline. Additionally it denies what the Israeli minister Ben-Eliezer explicitly said.

It is therefore impossible to view the statements of Iran’s deputy chief of staff, that if Israel attacks Iran then Israel "will be eliminated immediately," as empty rhetoric aimed at prodding National Infrastructures Minister Benjamin Ben-Eliezer to respond with a similar promise. Israel has never threatened to destroy any state, while Iran never refrains from doing so.
Iran is playing with fire

The editorial includes more false claims.

A comment, titled SENSIBLE THINKING, to that editorial from one Sechel in Jerusalem lauds the paper:

I am happy for the return of Haaretz to sensible and rational thought. May you continue with such clear thinking.

Sensible, clear thinking?

Some people in Israel are really beyond any rational thought. To what end?

Welcome to the real world. The Chosen Tribe are as crazy as the mullahs who make American spielers look like amateurs when, in reality, they are all as dangerous as each other.
And none of them would know God if She bit them on the ass.

An Haaretz reporter going by the name of Yehudi Sinai apparently was able to get
both the Pope and the Dalai Lama on teleconference this morning, working under a
subterfuge about making a sizeable contribution, if they would speak with him for
a few moments. The Pope was in his Pope Mobile in WADC when he took the call, and
the Dalai Lama was in his Seattle hotel room, preparing his afternoon speech. It
was a momentous, and certainly timely opportunity to link together these two great
leaders of the most famously peaceful tribes of Jesus and Buddha, brought together
by the greatest of all peaceful tribes, Hebrews, who have no prophet, but profit.
Yehudi spoke first to the Pope, “Call it, friendo.”
The Pope was put off, puzzled, “I thought this was a charitable contribution?”
“Call it, friendo.”
“Well, before I can do that, I need to know what I’m risking.”
“Everything.”
The Dalai Lama was waiting for his chance to speak, and jumped right in,
“There is no everything and no nothing, no coin toss and no duality.”
Yehudi persisted, “One of you is going to have to call it.”
The Pope, being Head of the Catholic Papacy and a wealthy World Leader
used to taking chances where there was money to be made, shouted,”Heads!”
Both religious figures heard a metallic ping over the phone, and the sound of
a quarter hitting on wood. They waited, expectantly, sweat dewing their lips.
“Well?” the Pope demanded, exasperated. Silence.
“One thing,” Yehudi finally spoke, “What about condoms?”
The Pope was furious at being tricked, or thinking that he had been.
He growled, “They are an abomination against the Creator and the Jugen!!”
Yehudi repeated his question a second time for the Dalai Lama.
The Dalai Lama thought for a second, then laughed, “I wouldn’t know.”

Gaza op possible after Bush visit

There is a heightened sense in the security establishment that a broad-scale ground incursion inside the Gaza Strip is necessary this summer to deal a severe blow to Hamas’s infrastructure, sources in Jerusalem said Wednesday, following the death of three soldiers in a Gaza ambush.

The sources said the idea would be to “clean Gaza out” and deliver a devastating blow to the considerable Hamas military infrastructure that has been built up there over the last few years – largely with Iranian and Syrian support – through the relentless smuggling of arms.
According to the sources, Israel would have no intention of remaining inside Gaza, but rather would hand it over for administration to either Egypt or a third party.
While admitting that neither Egypt nor a third party such as NATO, the EU or the UN would be too excited about taking over responsibility for the Strip, the sources said Hamas’s recent breach of the border with Egypt was a significant “wake-up call” for the Mubarak regime, which has become increasingly concerned that Hamas now poses a considerable threat to Egypt.
The sources pointed out that the head of the Defense Ministry’s Diplomatic-Security Bureau, Amos Gilad, has shuttled back and forth to Cairo a number of times in recent weeks for talks with top Egyptian security officials.
