Moon of Alabama Brecht quote
January 16, 2008
War is Peace

I’m a war president.  I make decisions here in the Oval Office in foreign-policy matters with war on my mind.  Again, I wish it wasn’t true, but it is true.  And the American people need to know they got a president who sees the world the way it is.  And I see dangers that exist, and it’s important for us to deal with them.
Bush Interview on ‘Meet the Press’, February 8, 2004

"I’m sure people view me as a warmonger and I view myself as peacemaker," the president said.
..
When asked to respond to the fact that many Americans do not view him as a peacemaker, the president replied, "We’ll see what history says. I happen to believe that the actions I’ve taken were necessary to protect ourselves and lay the foundation for peace. That’s what I believe.

What a fuck-up. The rest of the world already views him this way; in time my country may, too. If we’re allowed to live that long.

A few notes from the same opera, as sung by Adolf Hitler:
“There must be no majority decisions, but only responsible persons, and the word ‘council’ must be restored to its original meaning. Surely every man will have advisers by his side, but the decision will be made by one man.”
“Any alliance whose purpose is not the intention to wage war is senseless and useless”
“We will not capitulate – no, never! We may be destroyed, but if we are, we shall drag a world with us – a world in flames.”
Always before God and the world, the stronger has the right to carry through what he wills”
“The majority can never replace the man”
“Only force rules. Force is the first law”
“The victor will never be asked if he told the truth.”
“Who says I am not under the special protection of God?”

Juan Cole cites extensively today from the Lebonese press’ comments on the Codpiece-in-Chief’s recent waltz through the Muddled East, which contains this pearl by Michel Saba:

“Bush wants to stand in the place of John the Baptist in the Jordan River to baptize the Arab and non-Arab regimes and purify them of all their hostile thoughts toward America. He wants to pour water on their heads not with plans open for peace and love, but with a grip clutching a cowboy gun. He wants to baptize peace with war because he is convinced that nations should be free by force, democratic by force, and advanced by force, because this is their fate. The concept of freedom only implies association with the US, and democracy only implies the acceptance of American policy, and advancement only implies adopting the American model….Instead of standing in the place of John the Baptist, Bush will stand in the place of Herodus, the killer of John the Baptist.”

He was a war president as long as it looked like the USA was winning and the CNN reports showed arrows thrusting across maps of Iraq.
Now that people tire of the war, he sets out to be a peacemonger.

A snippet from Egypt protests over Bush visit:

While the outcry against Bush’s visit from Islamists, opposition parties, independent newspapers and bloggers was predictable, many commentators were taken aback by the ferocity of attacks launched in state-owned newspapers.
“The crow of peace: Bush,” ran the front-page headline of Rose El-Youssef, which maintains close ties with the National Democratic Party (NDP).

To be fair, people don’t only view him as a warmonger. There is much more to Bush administration than that:
Canada puts U.S., Israel on torture watchlist

An official Canadian government document has put both the United States and Israel on a watch list of countries where prisoners run the risk of being tortured, CTV television reported on Thursday.
The revelation is likely to embarrass the minority Conservative government, which is a staunch U.S. ally.
