Moon of Alabama Brecht quote
November 13, 2007
Another Barfly Meeting?

Around the last new year’s eve some ten or so Moon of Alabama folks met in Hamburg, Germany.

If enough people promiss to come, we might repeat such festivities. This time those would be at Dan of Steele’s place in north-westeast Italy near Venice. The timeframe is somewhere between Christmas and the first week of January.

Anyone interested?

If you are, leave a comment here or send an email to Dan of Steele or to my address.

Venice is in northwest Italy?? I’m confused … but interested!

airports serving the area are Venice (Marco Polo) for some international flights, Treviso (Venice – Treviso), and Trieste (Ronchi dei Legionari) of which the last two are smaller mainly continental airports served by charter and cheap airlines such as Ryan Air. Venice is about 45 minute train ride away.
My home is also near the Dolomites with one ski area (Piancavallo) about 45 minutes away. Other more famous resorts such as Cortina are 2 hours or so away.
We would have room for maybe 8 people if they can get by sleeping on cots or air mattresses.
My wife and I would be thrilled to host any and all who wish to come. It was truly a wonderful experience in Hamburg last year, it is quite rare to meet people for the first time who share your interests.

i would love to come. the thought keeps swimming in my head. however i am not positive wrt the dates and my finances. where there is a will, there is usually a way, so i am crossing my fingers.
i had sooooo much fun last year.

i really want to come. hopefully my health will allow that to be possible – tho it is far from that situation today;
it is a splendid thing that people have physically connected with one another & are able to share celbratory times within the darkness the empire forces us to live
the feedback from last year was really strong – i am sure it does the community a real good – to have these meetings because we are, as always, human, too human

I would love to come but I am already committed to family travel until Jan 1. Can we make it the first week of January?

Posted by: Bea | Nov 14 2007 2:56 utc | 9

I would crawl seven miles on my bare belly over busted glass just to watch the train for Italy pull out.
Unfortunately, I’m living on a $13k/year budget these days.
Have a wonderful Holiday!

looking into finances. it may be possible. first week of jan is better for me. last year was pretty special. will never forget greeting the new year in the rain with the fireworks, bernhard’s delicious cooking, conversation until the wee wee hours over whiskey and wine….
if the effing congress gets off its fat backsides and impeaches already so i can stop lobbying, i would love to be there.

I am flexible, the first week in January can work too.
Jake, check out cheapflights.com. they have round trip tickets from Tucson to Venice for under 500 smackers.

I would have had difficulty traveling, but if it’s in the
Veneto-Friuli area I will definitely participate and with great enthusiasm. I hereby offer to do act as a Venice area tour guide to those interested in some “off the beaten path” spots in the Veneto. Unlike DanofSteele, I live in Mestre, a much less chic Veneto address than the Dolomiti and Cortina.
There are many of you I whom have long wanted to meet, be it for the knowledge, the politico-social committment, or the human sensibility and passion you have shared with the MOA community. Naturally that desire is tempered by the doubts and hesitations associated with passing from virtual to real-world exchanges, the fear that knights in shining armor and beautiful princesses may turn out in reality to be human, all too human, and that I too may turn out to be rather more an opinionated old-fart than a stimulating companion. Still, nothing ventured, nothing gained: why should I abandon the joy of enthusiasm to the young
and carefree? If I can be of assistance in setting up the logistics don’t hesitate to write: hannahkolouthon@hotmail.com

“…the fear that knights in shining armor and beautiful princesses may turn out in reality to be human, all too human, …”
The reality, HKOL, is that it doesn’t really matter.
If you are a fraction of the guide that Bernhard is, sign me up. [but I promise you’ll be herding cats] [ask b] 🙂

Actually, I would really like to come, but would hate to take up sleeping space, is there any thing like a small hotel or any thing like that nearby? Being semi-retired, dates are no problem for me. What can I bring from Denmark?

chuck,
look forward to seeing you. a good site for hotel reservations is http://www.hrs.de the area you are looking for is post code 33080 (Prata di Pordenone) in Italy.
you can book a room at Ca’ Brugnera (quite nice and fairly new) for about 50 euro a night. Pordenone is only 10 kms away and there is bus service should you want to take a room there.

As before, I have unavoidable family commitments. So sorry. I would love to be with you all. Maybe one day. Absent friends. All that.
And if anyone passes by Geneva, there is a bed and company here. Good food too!

late to post – because I really want to go, but cannot swing it at all – but just wanted to say, may you all have a rollicking good time.
