Gates was involved in the Iran/Contra crimes, he nurtured the Taliban movement, Osama and the Pakistani ISI and he has a record of deceiving Congress.

So will the Democrats fold on this nomination like they were trained to do the last six years?

Or have they grown some spine and will demand a SecDef that understands military issues, has some knowledge about the Middle East instead of old Soviet affairs and is not a crook?

The 2006 election is over and in 6 or 7 weeks, the end-result may be in. Until then I’ll stick to my prediction. As one could expect, the Democrats have already begun their typical party infights with the party right side trying to screw the voters and the activists, now that their part is done.

The Democrats in congress, with a fresh mandate and perceived credibility, will not press for US forces to leave Iraq. They agree with the general imperial project. They only want it do be done right. They want to win what cannot be won. Doing it right means more US troops to Iraq, not less. It also means attacking Iran and Syria.
