WB: The Price of Dissent

Billmon:

Cohen is right when he argues that the "the political zeitgeist has changed dramatically in four years," and ratings aren’t the only, or even the most important, explanation. The atmosphere of oppressive fear and ’50s style conformity ("watch what you do, watch what you say") has dissipated.

The Price of Dissent

Comments

A few days ago Billmon posted the “Its always the dollar” post. I think you need to extend that to see what’s up with Keith and GE. Religious nuts have outlived their usefulness and are being pushed aside. Dollar has no religion and a long term attachment to freaks like Dobson and Falwell can be fairly bad in this globalized world. Now that we are stuck with Iraq, which was the corporatist mission for the Bush admin, we can slough of the rotting skin and dress up as the liberal imperialists of the old. I see a bright future for Rockefeller and his ilk. Of course they will be kept on pretty short leash by the Cheney-ites, in case they really turn the power over the crazy democratic base. Then, you know, scandals like buggering boys and oral sex come out and knock you right of your high horse.
So how many of us expect to see the democratic house and senate do the following?
1- Get out of Iraq?
2- Pull down the wall and bring some justice to the Israel-Palestinian situation?
3- Negotiate with Iran in good faith?
4- Come up with a universal health care plan?
5- Cancel the bloody missile-shield contracts?
6- Tear up and throw away the Patriot Act?
7- Shut down secret CIA jails?
I could go on but the toilet paper has run out and this sample ballot is the only thing I got. So there …..

Well, of course you’re right Max. But I’m still gonna vote against any Republicrat I have a chance to. I vote in Texas so that leaves me voting against Hutchison this time. An exercise in futility that I feel I must undertake.
If I lived in New York I could vote for Howie Hawkins. I think there must be some choices in other elections around the country. I feel it is still important to exercise whatever limited choice I have.
When I worked for the Department of Health in South Texas a colleague had a poster on his wall showing a heron swallowing a frog, headfirst. The frog’s “hands” reached out of the heron’s beak, wrapped around the heron’s neck, attempting to throttle the bird.

@JLF: You are right John, but I refuse to give up my right to bitch, moan, and generally piss about the choices this wonderful system of ours has left me with.
