Interesting juxtaposition here. Anyone know context of Turdsville’s statement?

Speaking of Denial, Utter Madness & Sound bites, nobody should miss this choice bit: Stung by criticism, Bush calls for offensive ‘across the world’
US President George W. Bush called for fighting America’s enemies “across the world” as he stepped up his counteroffensive following charges that his policies were breeding a new generation of Islamic terrorists.
The call, delivered in his weekly radio address, was aimed at countering a rash of accusations that the Bush administration had seriously mishandled the war in Iraq and created fertile ground for Islamic extremism.
The criticism was fueled by a new National Intelligence Estimate, portions of which were declassified this past week. The document argues that the war in Iraq had spawned a new generation of Islamic radicals determined to strike against the United States.

What has changed since FDR? Has the median voting populace become less aware? Has the respect for the sanctity of the political organ been lessened? Are we so safe that we no longer need leadership?

Bush didn’t say those words; Billmon was cracking wise.
Because Billmon:
1. attributed the line to a specific address,
2. has a wide readership, most of which can’t stomach actually reading or listening to a Bush address, and
3. has a reputation for reprinting telling verbatim juxtapositions,
I’d advise him to slap a disclaimer on his post. This is the stuff of which urban legends are born, and Bush’s brand of clueless venality requires no mythic embellishment.

Didn’t he also say ‘I have nothing to offer but blood, toil, terror and tax cuts’?

“What has changed since FDR? Has the median voting populace become less aware? Has the respect for the sanctity of the political organ been lessened? Are we so safe that we no longer need leadership?”
1933 was the worst year of the depression. Because of consummer credit we don’t know we are there in 2006. Our ‘safety’ is in the never-never plan.

Have to agree with ralphbon, #4. I searched the speech for “fear”, which only occurred once.
I know billmon likes to make things up, but normally I expect to be able to tell without having to search the original sources!
Irony, if not exactly dead, is rather sickly these days.
