Billmon:

As I think everybody but David Broder now understands, the conventions of he said, she said journalism aren't designed to deal with the tactics of modern information warfare.

If one really looks for the source of this malaise, this failure of journalism to even bother going through the motions of investigation and presentation of facts, one will find--

that journalists no longer see themselves as the fourth branch of our democracy. They no longer see themselves as the intellectual and moral equals of the captains of industry, or the masters of war, or the celebrities, wealthy, or even the well dressed.

Journalists are toadies nowadays.

That's the problem. Scarcely a handful of them still willing to go hunting when they smell a rat.

...the corporate media simply aren't prepared -- by inclination, training or habit -- to cope with the "big lie" technique.

You're kidding right? Remember the NYTimes and the Pinch and Judy show? That was part and parcel of the "big lie" and the perps were "the corporate media".

But I've enough journalist left in me to still be astonished at how deeply and sincerely so many in my old profession has learned to love Big Brother. And they didn't even have to have cages filled with carnivorous rats strapped to their heads.

There are no journalists in the American "mainstream". You have to go to Russia to find a journalist, and she lives in a cemetary there.

To me, the big story was not about who stuck what into whose orifices at what time, or about naughty emails. The fact is that the House leadership allowed a man, who they knew had issues with pages, to continue to chair a caucus whose goal it was to protect children from ....... people exactly like him. This is hyporcrisy taken to a breathtaking level, and an abject failure of leadership. Whoever had knowledge of this and allowed it continue is simply not fit to serve in Congress. If that's 1/2 of the House, so be it. If it includes some Dems, fine by me.

The only person I've personally seen who really pounded this point home was....Joe Scarborough. Go figure. But Katrina did a number on Joe's head, and he's been mostly off of the bus ever since.

The sad truth is that the only defense for the Big Lie is to throw integrity out the window and get down in the sewer with the Big Liars. So when the MSM bobbleheads scratch their noggins and wonder "Is it possible the Democrats timed this to coincide with the election?", my response would be "Exactly what the fuck is your point."

I disagree.
