It's only natural that the longer-term trends behind the news of the day are ignored, but they deserve careful consideration:

the environmental changes that have promoted the deer population explosion

the role of deer and deer ticks as vectors of the extremely debilitating Lyme disease

[and yes, this is meant metaphorically]

The deer refers to a youthful prank by Sen. Allen. He and some college buds shot a deer and Allen left the head in a mailbox in a black neighborhood. This was after Godfather I, when an animal head would have been seen as a death threat.
