We have a winner-takes-all, live-for-the moment ethos in our culture. Results are all that counts, analyzing past motives and/or future ramifications is left for intellectuals, fringe elements and bloggers.
And Rove is a winner: he drew his opponents out on Bush’s greatest weakness in the 2000 elections, namely his patchy military service record, and slapped them down with a thud that still through the halls of American journalism to this day.
He managed do defuse the Plame leak in a manner that not only cleared his name but also distracted entirely from the issue at hand; the lies that he was willing to tell to bring Americans around to supporting the war in Iraq.
He is a demigod now to those who would emulate him, and, scariest of all, he is now lurking *within us*, waiting to pop out of the ribcage of the body politic at the next opportunity.

But as his time in the West Wing draws to a close…

Just read Billmons two new pieces. Regarding “between seats”, I just want to say: take care and welcome back when you have more time. I sort of have the feeling that you might write something after the election. When it turns out once again that exit polls can be very far of the mark, and people who complain that “aliens ate my vote” will be dismissed as tinfoil hat types.

i imagine they have already appropriated the thousand year reich & on hotter nights karl rove dances around the white house in his lederhosen singing horst wessel lieder & imagining himself & his boyish comrades like ralph reed in an austrian field dancing with the phantoms of odilio glôbotnik
but like their historic fathers (sauckel, frank, funk & albert “who do you believe me or your lying eyes'”speer) i imagine their time inside their bunkers is madder for them than for us – their madness only makes the material world more sacred
