WB: Uncle Ho

Billmon:

I would have thought David would have more important things to do with his time: running his rat lines into the Middle East Studies Association, tracing the sinister links between Harry Belafonte and Sheikh Omar Abdul-Rahman — above all, figuring out new and nasty ways to draw media attention to himself.

But apparently not. I guess even the slander business has its slow nights.

Glenn Greenwald and other bloggers contacted the reporters and a Rummy spokeman and STILL the right wing nuts claim that this was a diabolical plot.
A link in comments on this earlier post by Greenwald pointed to the real issue in this NYTimes/SWIFTS case:
bush did not inform congress until they knew the story was going to be in the NYT.
The administration is required under law to brief the entire intelligence committee on all intelligence programs.

so, this is about unchecked executive branch powers, not giving information to ppl who obviously already assume they are being tracked. Otherwise, why did al qaeda move so many of its assets into diamonds BEFORE the WTC attacks? (the book at this site can be downloaded at that link in two pdfs, btw.) –page 29 in this report begins the “Al Qaeda and Diamonds” information.
Al Qaeda bought diamonds before 9-11
in other words, Al Qaeda KNEW their assets would be frozen and further tracked. to think otherwise is demonstrably stupid.
In fact, the “evil” UN was a major group working on tracking them. And that evil “professional jewelers association” has also been tracking this information on terrorist funding!
And in fact, a Washington Post article tracking diamonds as a currency for terrorism (and an earlier Newsweek report) brought this issue to the attention of the Pentagon….of course, the nutcases do not want to hear that investigative journalism is good for the U.S. national interests, but here it is. Al Q converted 20 million into diamonds before 9-11.
This information is available because of investigations and testimony about Al Q financing that goes back to the mid-1990s.
