Moon of Alabama Brecht quote
April 22, 2006
Quod Licet Jovi …

This is an unmodified part of a screenshoot of the current National News page of the LA Times website.

Funny how these two stories appeared right next to each other.

Now, who are these leakers? Should they not be fired too?

The C.I.A. would not identify the leaker, but several government officials said it was Mary O. McCarthy, a veteran intelligence analyst who until 2001 was senior director for intelligence programs at the National Security Council, where she served under Presidents Clinton and Bush.

Public records show that Ms. McCarthy contributed $2,000 in 2004 to the presidential campaign of John Kerry, the Democratic candidate.

But maybe they leaked for the right reason. Like in Good Leak, Bad Leak.

Comments

Larry Johnson on the McCarthy firing:

I am struck by the irony that Mary McCarthy may have been fired for blowing the whistle and ensuring that the truth about an abuse was told to the American people. There is something potentially honorable in that action; particularly when you consider that George Bush authorized Scooter Libby to leak misleading information for the purpose of deceiving the American people about the grounds for going to war in Iraq. While I’m neither a fan nor friend of Mary’s, she may have done a service for her country. She was a lousy manager in my experience, but she is not a traitor and has not betrayed the identity of an undercover intelligence officer. That dirty work was done by the minions of George Bush and Dick Cheney. It is important to keep that fact in the forefront as the judgment on Mary McCarthy’s acts is rendered.

emptywheel has a nice addition to Rice leaking.

But the allegation made me think of a passage from Woodward’s Plan of Attack, a passage I’ve been meaning to call more attention to (I paid for this piece of shill book, damnit, and I’m going to get as much mileage out of it as I can).
The passage appears in the section discussing Bush’s decision to bomb Dora Farms before the deadline he had given to Saddam, in the hopes of killing Saddam before the start of the war. Bush calls adviser after adviser into the Oval Office to present the intelligence and receives their counsel on whether to authorize the attack. Finally, Bush kicks everyone but Dick out of the office, at which point Dick vocally supports the attack. At 7:12 P.M., Bush makes the decision to start the war.
So here’s the passage:

Rice placed a quick call at 7:30 P.M. to Benjamin Netanyahu, the Israeli finance minister, about another matter. He said he already knew about the war and wished it would be fast and “bloodless.” (391)

Condi then goes onto call David Manning, the British national security adviser, officially giving him and Tony Blair notice that the war is about to start.
