Houseleek

Houseleek
by beq
3"x3", acrylic on board
uncompressed

i didnยดt know anything about houseleek so I googled and this came up:

Superstitious country-folk in Wiltshire are often found to have a strong objection to the removal of a plant of Houseleek from their roof, or even to the plucking of the flowers by a stranger, believing it will bring death to the dwellers; it was formerly believed to be an efficient guard against sorcery as well as against lightning.

Houseleek

Interesting coincidence(?) of the shape of a plant and mythical stories about it inducing against its removal. Is that the background for this hesitating curiosity?

As we know “Interpretation is the revenge of the intellect upon art”, but why is she missing an eye in both recent dipictions beq?
Just wondering, not denegrating, I think their wonderful.

I don’t think beq is at her computer right now, unkka.
here’s my take…tho I really don’t have an “intellectual” response to this last series. ahem.
anyway, pun…a one eye or a one eye.
or, sometimes an eye isn’t an eye, ifyouknowwhatimean.
is she hesitating or licking her hand? did she get hurt or is she curious?
factoid that somehow seems apropo…waaaay back before DaVinci, tho he thought this too, educated opinion held that semen contained a mini me or you…that ejaculate came from the brain, traveled down the spinal cord and over the transom, so to speak.
the female was a depository…dirt, or earth, to put it in nicer terms, that was the place the man’s seed/homunculus grew.
(hmmm, maybe that’s why we have the image of mother earth…)
anyway, because of this idea, fellatio was thought to be cannibalism.
don’t know why they would make such a big deal out of that, though, since babies were simply left to die of starvation or killed if they interferred with the succession of family fortune or if a family was too poor…except when they were taken in because someone needed a kid to work for them or to become emperor when they were dead.
I wonder if that’s what inspired freud with the idea of vagina dentatis, since he cribbed oedipus, too.
then it’s more like a Saturn myth for a female, devouring her children…or a Medea? Maybe that Saturn myth was code for the love that dare not speak its name…
I’ve long thought that freud made it possible for moderns to make a transition to modernism by replacing the holy trinity with a psychological one…and funny how women got left out of the holy trinity, too.
But I really like Sartre’s take down of Freud over the idea of whether or not such a thing as an “unconscious” can exist. unfortunately, Sartre was of his time in his homophobia, too.
So, that one eye? love is third eye blind?
LOL. sorry, I’m too immature to comment on this thread. ๐Ÿ™‚

Alright beq,
I like the fact they’re so tiny 3″x3″. (intimate, physically) And yes, that real houseleek — looks too prick(ly) too. Thanks

The link didn’t work for me, hanshan. But thanks. I did get away this weekend. The mountains. A cabin on a trout stream. No tv, no phone, no computer. Thanks fauxreal, for your interpretation. I’d rather read others than present one of my own.
Last summer, my SO was telling me (on the telephone) how his pot of Hens & Chicks were blooming. He described the “blossom” and my filthy mind ran away with it. He said it reminded him of a French tickler and what you see is what I imagined. I found the Houseleek reference later.
@ fauxreal: “So, that one eye? love is third eye blind?”
It’s been my sad experience that love has at times made me half blind.

Posted by: beq | Nov 21 2005 18:09 utc | 10

oh, I like what hanshan had to say, beq.
Shunga sounds so much better than my ribald remarks (tho the Shunga word wasn’t used, hanshan knew.)
…she’s good, isn’t she, hanshan?
For me, tho, the Floating World in relation to this series has more to do with the hydrolics of blood flow…
there I go again…must. stop. making. bad. jokes.
I’m playing hookie, so had to spend a moment looking at the “graffitti” on the corridors of the Moon.
It’s been my sad experience that love has at times made me half blind.
sigh. yes, you are so sly. LOL.

happy to hear you could escape to the great-out/ –
the erotics of fly fishing is maybe something you should
look into (j/k)
& the explanation is stand-alone outrageous

Posted by: hanshan | Nov 21 2005 19:20 utc | 12

Okay hanshan. I went back and found the Ukiyo-e in the sidebar. You got me where I live. Truly. I’ve studied shunga for some time (obviously) and am always taken with sensuous gestures (apart from the obvious) So my work isn’t usually so out there. wink. Hokusai is my hero. If I’ve made you smile or laugh then I’ve done all I set out to do.
“the erotics of fly fishing is maybe something you should

Hmmmmmm. Ever heard of trout tickling? I’m already on it. =)

laugh, smile & made my day/wknd
yrs ago spent a bunch of time w/ Japanese
friends & found their sexual humor to be
delightfully refreshing, innocent, & endearingly
disarming.Followed up w/ a crash course in Shunga
& other Asian erotica which has always been, to my mind,
the apotheosis of sexual representation in the visual arts.
I still laugh when I recall some of the images.
Shorn of the twisted baggage of western psycho-sexual
pathology Asian openeness towards sex & sexuality
is a breath of spring.
I was exceedingly surprised when first confronted w/
your delightful imagery & the obvious humor in
your techniques(wink). I wasn’t aware of anyone else
working quite so obviously in this vein ( s’cuse the pun).
In fact, was motivated to research a bit
more on a related subject(lost in love)
the posting of which will have to wait until tomorrow
Trout tickling indeed (heh)

roland barthes sd something like japan never speak of sex but it is everywhere – america always talk of sex but it is nowhere
i’ve most probably got it wrong or mistranslated

Posted by: remembereringgiap | Nov 22 2005 0:28 utc | 19

oh, r’giap, I don’t mean to be hitting you with 2x4s…I am so totally harmless in the floating world…and I know I’m a long way from enlightened.
I’m afraid I have many lives to go, if they do go on.
In this one it seems like I am in a cycle of laughing and crying in equal measure. Sex makes me laugh, and love makes me cry. I’d rather laugh.

mmmmm – Just a turn of phase? love is a drug
In the attraction stage, a group of
neuro-transmitters
called ‘monoamines’ play an important role:
* Dopamine – also activated by cocaine and nicotine
* Norepinephrine – Otherwise known as
adrenalin. Starts us sweating and gets the
heart racing
* Serotonin – One of love’s most important
chemicals and one that may actually
send us temporarily insane
Researchers have identified pathways in the brain
which light up when
teeagers are in love.Falling in love seems to
have a similar effect
on the brain as using cocaine. It’s so
pleasurable it’s almost like an addictions.
In a snit? Fretting your burbling
idiocy a deterrent
to hooking up? Not to worry
( bust a move)
It can take between 90 seconds and 4 minutes
to decide if we fancy someone. But this has
little to do with your smooth-talking.
As far as attraction goes, here’s how
we get the message:
* 55% is through body language
* 38% is the tone and speed of our voice
* Only 7% is through what we say
Does teddy boy come w/ a scratch & sniff?
Maybe an ocytocin cocktail pack?
Break out that sweaty T
Hmmm
Oxytocin – This is released by the hypothalamus
gland during child birth and also helps the breast
express milk. It helps cement the strong bond between
mother and child. It is also released by both sexes
during orgasm and it is thought that it promotes
bonding when adults are intimate. The theory goes
that the more sex a couple has, the deeper their
bond becomes.
The doppelganger under the sheets. Yikes.
Is it ghost busters?
“Men, in some way, had become more like women,
and women had become like men” says Marazziti.
It’s as if nature wants to eliminate what can be
diffent in men and women, because it’s more
important to survie {and mate} at this stage.”
in your eyes
Bartel’s team has found that when people look at
their lovers, the neural circuits that are normally
associated with critical social assessment of other
people are supressed( Neuroimage, vol 21,p 1155)
He asked two complete strangers to reveal to each
other intimate details about their lives. This carried
on for an hour and a half. The two strangers were
then made to stare into each others eyes without
talking for four minutes. Afterwards many of his
couples confessed to feeling deeply attracted to
their opposite number and two of his
subjects even married afterwards.
Crank up the love – rob a bank together –
In a year of living dangerously

Another experiment showed that if people
experience fear on a date
they often
misinterpret
that feeling as love.

So dates at a theme park are
likely to be successful. A bungee
jump might seal
your relationship for life!
Ring you up ?
Scientists have proved that even
the most seemingly innocent chat with a
woman can be enough to send male sex
hormones soaring.
