WB: Final Countdown

It would be a crying shame if Fitzgerald closed the book before we get to the part where Hercule Poirot or Miss Jane Marple solves the crime.

Final Countdown

Comments

The questions at stake in the case are, of course, relatively trivial.
Can’t say I agree with that. While the intention to discredit Wilson was certainly petty in the extreme, the consequence of outing an entrenched CIA operative working to prevent nuclear non-proliferation in the Middle East has the potential to be catastrophic.
And even if rolling up our WMD spy network does not eventually result in a mushroom cloud over a major American city one day; the agents involved, their contacts, and all of these peoples’ families have certainly been placed in mortal jeopardy by the perpetrators of this deadly criminal enterprise.
The public will probably never know the final tally of lives lost as a result of the Administration’s vendetta, but if the reaction of both the CIA AND the Federal Judiciary to this case is any indication of the seriousness of this matter, we probably don’t want to know.

This may not be Shakespeare
must admit i’ve been a little dramatic lately. i did go out and celebrate the eve tonight. have high expectations (by nature an optimist). none the less, i can’t help but sense the best format for the movie (especially after reading nur’s italia translation) is a spagetti western. ok, i’m a little drunk, jim beam. what’s your excuse?

Logic, I suppose, requires us to expect a Hutton report as opposed to Clint Eastwood (in the spagetti westerns, annie) and sure, its what is most likely to happen. But personally I expect, and demand for that matter, indictments! And a bunch of ’em. Today. Either way, its anger that I feel.

I want to know.

I want to be wrong about this but if you stop and think about it the people that pushed for one person one vote and equality before the law etc had to push pretty hard.
The Magna Carta didn’t come out of letters to the editor. Similarly women’s suffrage may not have come out of the barrel of a gun, but particularly in countries with empires (eg Edwardian England) people died to get it.
So we may be a little optimistic. It is possible to lose all of those gains by ticking the wrong box in the polling booth. The question is can they be recovered that way or will people have to fight the good fight again.
We will know soon enough but if Fitz does turn out to be all piss and wind it is essential that particularly those who live in Amerika don’t become disheartened as they did after last November.
It just means its time to focus on more direct methods.

TALKEE TALKEE: Any trouble for the Regime will create financial chaos.

Posted by: eftsoons | Oct 28 2005 9:32 utc | 6

@eftsoons
That dow jones link you put up with alla the repug shills scraping the bottom of the barrel with silly reasons that they should be entitled to keep stealing from the poor to give to the rich is actually quite amusing in a morbid way. eg:
” The dollar’s year-to-date run may be in jeopardy should confidence in Bush’s ability to steer the economy be shaken.”
Confidence in Bush’s ability to steer the economy may be shaken! Does that mean he may not be able to run the deficit into uncharted waters or does it mean that he may have to stop his cronies in oil from continuing their extortion?
It’s redundant to point out these same fellas had no such worries about the economic impact of Clinton copping head jobs. But on the other hand that was trivial in comparison to taking a few good swings at your security intelligence service with an ax just to score political points. I wonder why they didn’t say so at the time!

@Debs is dead
“all piss and wind” is the feeling I have also.
.. and I also think that it will be cold day in hell when ticking a box in a polling booth makes a difference.
Magna Carta? What a ‘quaint’ document.

Is this the begining?: ( A poster at kos checks in with his community, and asks the big one, the one we all think about)
Does anyone else in Manhattan smell that smell?
I just came from midtown east and something smelled sweet acrid and burning. I got home to the upper west side and it still smelled. I just got off the 313 phone in number for issues in New York and they said they were getting calls from all over Manhattan and that the enviromental protection people are out testing. The smell is getting stronger.
Is anyone else up in Manhattan, do you smell it?
I will erase this soon, just checking with the Manhattan community

feeling pessimistic, which is my habitude – but reinforced by contradictory report of wapo & nyt tho why i would accept anything from them is beyond me
perhaps it is not warranted, this pessimism – but it was waned in elctions 2004 – in front of jérôme’s optimism about kerry victory

Just come on the BBC that Karl Rove has announced he’s not going to be charged.
Scooter may be charged. There won’t be any more doormen in the Fitzgerald clan for a couple of generations.

Posted by: Debs is dead | Oct 28 2005 12:20 utc | 11

Deep breath everybody. Rove hasn’t “announced” anything. Story in today’s NYT comes, surely, from Rove’s lawyers and PR team. I.e., if only Libby (and maybe other background types) is/are indicted today, then it’s a victory for them – even if Rove is left by Fitz to twist in the wind for now. Rove hanging out (“kept under investigation” by Fitz) is a worst case for bushco, as all will be terrified to communicate with the Karlster. MS America won’t care that much, IMO.
Fitz’s GJ is the “special” not “regular” variety and can be extended for another length of time.
I’d like to know: Is Fitz legally entitled to depose Berlusconi when he comes to town on Monday?

Posted by: Hamburger | Oct 28 2005 12:38 utc | 12

Deep breath! Why? There won’t be anything different in this well trammelled case in a week or a year.
If Rove doesn’t get indicted today he won’t be unless BushCo adjudge they can’t weather the storm.
Harriet’s been let go to shore up the rethug base and if the sheeple wear this with a ‘deep breath’ then they get what they deserve.

Posted by: Debs is dead | Oct 28 2005 12:45 utc | 13

‘Deep breath’ was meant w.r.t. the notion that Rove himself has announced (on BBC or elsewhere) that he won’t be indicted. My view is that this is pure Rovian spin. His team is setting up expectations for tomorrow and the NYT, as per usual, tells their story. Would set up tomorrow’s headline: Rove not indicted. That’s what the Rovians want America to hear. But in fact, being kept under investigation would be a very very bad outcome for KR.
I agree fully that all other “news” re Iran, France, Russia, Miers, etc. is noise pollution. I continue to believe Fitz has the goods and is playing his hand very carefully.
Still want to know if a US prosecutor can depose a foreign hean of state. Anyone know?

@ Hamburger
I don’t know, but U.S. presidents
certainly can.

Hannah, good point. Wonder what’s up for grabs that Berlusconi would go for.
