Bonfire of the Stupidities

WB: Colin Blow +

If politics is show business for ugly people, then I guess corporate journalism is intelligence work for stupid people.

II. Buffoon Watch

Once Fitzgerald pops the clutch, it’s going to be an absolute media feeding frenzy, even if Cheney isn’t on the menu.

.. if Shrub lied to Fitzgerald as glibly as he lied in the above statements, then his ghost and Tricky Dick’s ghost someday may have the chance the swap stories — in hell — about what it feels like to be an unindicted co-conspirator.

Judy the Source

Never attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by stupidity.

There is a bit of discussion about Judith Miller’s security clearance. In her Sunday piece she writes:

During the Iraq war, the Pentagon had given me clearance to see secret information as part of my assignment "embedded" with a special military unit hunting for unconventional weapons.

We know her article has been checked by her lawyer before it went public. It is not just like her notebook seems to indicate that she had a clearance, she had one.

Unless, of course, they discovered the truth, but went with the mistake in order to give themselves semi-plausible deniability. Somehow, I think that’s giving them way too much credit.

After first reading today’s Washington Post VandeHei/Pincus piece I saw nothing new in there. But firedoglade had better eyes and found these bits:

WB: Trembler +

By the time I was fully awake, it was over, and I lay there in the darkness — half stoned, half asleep, wondering what the hell was going on.

That’s what it feels like now — except this time I have a pretty clear idea what’s coming.

The real question is: What "good for one use only" legal doctrine will Roberts, Miers, Scalia and Thomas adopt this time.

At the moment, though, it looks like Gray Lady wouldn’t recognize the truth if it came up and slapped her right in her five o’clock shadow.

Plame Thread IV

This is the only really important part of yesterdays reporting about the Plame affair:

Before the grand jury, Mr. Fitzgerald asked me questions about Mr. Cheney. He asked, for example, if Mr. Libby ever indicated whether Mr. Cheney had approved of his interviews with me or was aware of them. The answer was no.
Judith Miller: My Four Hours Testifying in the Federal Grand Jury Room

What other questions did Fitzgerald ask about Cheney? Is there a connection between Cheney and Victoria Wilson? What did he ask about Bush?

Hmm…

WB: A Chorus Line

The stage lights dim and an outside scene – a stone terrace, with an Iraqi city in the background – appears on a projection screen behind the stage. Barber stands chatting with the captain while the technicians scurry around making last-minute preparations. The dancers twist and kick.

Plame Thread III

After the fold you will find my first impressions of reading the revealing or not revealing article in the New York Times on the Plamegate issue.

The most serious points for me:

– Miller does NOT do a full disclosure to her paper, the NYT, for this article.

– Sulzberger did prohibit the reporting on the case for "personal reasons". (Doesn´t Judy have a nice ass?)

– Keller did screw it up because he thinks Sulzberger has a nice ass.

WB: Hogtied

The unilateralist fantasy (which I once described as the kind of internationalism that even an isolationist could love) has collided with global reality — one part economic integration, one part political disintegration, shaken and stirred. And reality has won, tying the colossus down almost as tightly as the Lilliputians did Gulliver.

Now the question is: What can Gulliver do about it? Or, even more importantly, what will Gulliver try to do about it?
