It was only last year that Bush appointed Charles Pickering — just before Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday! Pickering was the guy who wanted to go easy on cross-burners.
Now that Bush faces no more elections, why not criticize the Southern Strategy? Call it the Hypocrite’s Tactic.

The Morning Edition story this discusses (and quotes) Mehlman walking back from his “apology” later in the same day after he spoke to the NAACP.

The only person who is really sorry about the Southern Strategy is the guy who was behind it, Kevin Phillips. His book, American Dynasty, shows how much he regrets getting the fundies into politics, and how much he despises its outcome…i.e. Dubya.
