Who’s Charo? (Honest question, never heard the name)

Was it in Fellinis” Roma” that had the papal fashon show — with the ever more elaborate entrys, culminating in a regalia repleat with flashing christmas tree lights so huge and cumbersome the pope had to be wheeled down the runway on a pallet, unable to walk or even move — or was it just a fever dream i had once?

Sorry for the double post

@ Jerome [and other francophiles],
We are planning a quick family trip to Paris, 3 days tops. [Yes unfortunately only 3 days.] What would an eight year old girl particularly enjoy in Paris? [Not Disney!] We intend to return again with her, so the trip can be leisurely. Would you have any suggestions?

Charo … the original cuchi-cuchi girl…

This is Billmon at his best – and a sorely needed point to make. As I came into the house the other day, I mentioned that I had been listening to National Popelic Radio.
My natural lack of restraint would have led me to expand on the ESPN entry:

… Later, ESPN’s patented “caddy cam” takes you inside the clubhouse for an intimate look at the world of pedophile golf, as papal hopefuls instruct altar boys on shaft selection, head size, and proper grip.

Great link, Kate! Yes, Jérôme, Charo – the epitome of a celebrity, someone who is famous for being well-known.

If you ever saw Charo and Andy Williams sing “The Way We Were” on “The Mike Douglas Show!”, then you would not think she was talentless.
Marvin Hamlisch played piano, I think.

what school of marxism do you study which allows for a passion for charo – i’ve been reading all night all the manifestoes & they say nothing of her

gylangirl – if your 8-year-old is anything like our 6-year-old, the reply would be : sulking and shopping, both which you can nicely do pretty much anywhere in Paris!
More seriously (well, shopping is probably not a bad idea), it depends what she likes or what you have in mind. Museums? Anthropological lessons (the Parisian is an endlessly fascinating species)? Walking around? Plain old fun?
If you’re only there for 3 days, I can suggest the following:
– walking around in the central areas – lots of nice buildings/monuments/places to enjoy. Go to the top of the Eiffel Tower, or of Notre Dame, or of the Arc de Triomphe (or, if the weather is nice and you have a bit of time, the hot air balloon in the Parc André Citroen in the 15th. You can also do that at night, the sight is amazing. (I’d be happy to meet you if you go the the Eiffel tower as I live very near by)
– visit the parcs in the center: the Luxembourg, the Palais Royal, the parc Monceau, ot the newer ones like in Bercy or the Par Citrone in the 15th. You can also go the the Jardin d’Acclimatation in the 16th which has a lot of activities for kids (small zoo/small amusement park/kid shows)
– if you want culture, try the Rodin museum in the 7th, it’s pretty small for a museum, it’s in a nice area (not far from Napoleon’s tomb if you’re a history buff), and it’s pretty spectacular – nice art and a nice setting.
And of course, enjoy the food!

gylangirl, who am I to second-guess a Parisian, but I once baby-sat for a 7-year-old in Paris for a month. We enjoyed the gardens and fountains in the Tuileries but the Luxembourg Gardens are a must. The Eiffel Tower, obviously. I tried to impress upon him the importance of seeing the Mona Lisa and the Venus de Milo at the Louvre (only because they’re famous–we literally walked in, followed the signs, saw them, and walked out). He also loved the boat tours as he got to see all the famous things in Paris while on a boat.
Have fun! Je suis tres jalouse.

Thanks so much Jerome [and ides] for all this information! Our daughter would enjoy a children’s playground in-between our sight-seeing. Sounds like the 15th and 16th are best bets. Merci beaucoup!
