Moon of Alabama Brecht quote
December 24, 2017

Christmas

Roman Christianity moved the day to commemorate the birth of Jesus to the winter solstice. It thus replaced a holiday of older religions that celebrated the end of the dark times and the coming of more light. The deeper meaning stayed. Hope for new beginnings, needed as much today than ever. Hope for walls of darkness to come down.

Picture courtesy of the Bethlehem Association

Like every year I am visiting my larger family and enjoy to cook for the whole crowd. The challenge is to meet everyone's taste. The kids seem to change theirs each year. I try to come up with stories to make them like those odd side dishes. It works with the younger ones. The older folks, just like myself, are a bit less flexible. It does not have to be this way. We can and should stay open for new insights and challenges.

I wish you all a contemplative, hope- and peaceful Christmas.

The older folks, just like myself, are a bit less flexible. It does not have to be this way. We can and should stay open for new insights and challenges. Bernhard

Indeed; as the years advance, that inclination becomes stronger (less flexibility) and needs be fought at every corner.
May the coming new year be full of hope and awareness of the effort required for a truly new year...

Merry Christmas Mr B, and to your family too. Your blog brings so much respite to many of us in this 'desert'. It is an oasis in 'sand-swept lands'. Dunes of sand may seem romantic on a picture postcard, but anyone whom has known it, prefers the oasis and the warmth of other simple, but astute human beings. Thank you for hosting us friend. As one good cook to another, here is a recipe that is bound to wow your extended family. Happy cooking and many extended trails. Merry Christmas.

A Simple Caribbean Casserole
----------------------------
6 green onions
Pork shoulder butt (about 2 pounds, cut into chunks)
2 tablespoons minced, unpeeled fresh ginger
3 tablespoons soy sauce
3 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
3 tablespoons fish sauce
1 teaspoon dried thyme
1 teaspoon ground allspice
1 teaspoon cayenne pepper
1 teaspoon dried thyme
3 sweet potatoes, unpeeled, cut into chunk-thick slices
2 large red peppers, cut into bite-size pieces
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
1 can pineapple chunks in their own juice, or a half fresh pineapple if you happen to be in a place that has pineapples

1) Mince 2 green onions. In large bowl, toss minced green onions with pork, ginger, soy sauce, Worcestershire sauce, fish sauce, thyme, allspice and cayenne pepper. Cover pork and marinate 3 hours. Can prepare ahead of time and marinate overnight.

2) Preheat oven to 425*F. Cut remaining green onions into 2-inch longitudinal pieces. In a casserole pan, toss sweet potatoes (most of the health is in its unpeeled skin), red pepper and green onion pieces, and 1 tablespoon of oil. Bake, uncovered for 20 minutes.

3) While vegetables are cooking, in skillet, heat remaining 1 tablespoon oil over medium-high heat; add half of pork, reserving any marinade, and cook briefly at high heat, until browned. Transfer pork to bowl; repeat with remaining pork. The point in this step is to slightly brown the meat so it closes up on the outside as it still retains its uncooked juiciness on the inside. It is to brown its outsides briefly so to speak,

4) Add pineapple chunks with their juices, the browned pork, and reserved marinade to vegetables in the casserole pan. Bake, uncovered, stirring occasionally, 30 minutes longer, or until pork and vegetables are tender. I like mine well done so I bake it for an hour.

Now gather your guests around, open a nice bottle of vino and enjoy. Bon Appetite Mr B!

The spectacle of Jens Stoltenberg and Angelina Jolie posturing as identity-politics paragons is... speaking of German, once again I wish for one of those unique German compound words that express a commonplace binary emotion: in this case, simultaneous amusement and annoyance.

So I'm making one up: lustigärgerlich. I find this bumptious odd couple lustigärgerlich.

To make a timely parallel, it's as if during the first Christmas, King Herod and Salome issued a proclamation urging the populace to be especially kind and considerate to children everywhere.

Wishing you and your family a very warm and hearty Christmas together. I'm sure everyone will appreciate your cooking if not necessarily your stories.

Thank you so much for this blog and maintaining it. I know I speak for many when I say your posts are so invaluable in a world where disinformation and plain incompetent and ignorant reporting have become the new normal. News media outlets with so many more resources and money than you have are constantly churning out rubbish and act as nothing more than PR fronts for governments, think tanks and corporations, all with agendas they deliberately withhold from public scrutiny.

I'd like to wish all MoA readers and commenters a happy Christmas and I hope 2018 is a better year for everyone than this year has been.

"Although the only definitive solution is revolutionary, we must also point to possible steps toward a liberation of Brazil. And the first key step is auditing the public debt. Without auditing, without closing the tap that drains hundreds of billions of reals (Brazilian currency) from the people to private pockets, we will continue to be prisoners."

You nearly got my vote for World Blog of The Year. You came a very close second.

There are depressingly few individuals, who have the courage to do what you do.

First of all, the Formalities:
Merry Christmas

Now for a bit of Yuletide conspiracy. Minutes ago something happened to me that has never ever happened before. I made a reasonably civil comment on Zero Hedge (almost anything is reasonably civil by their standards), and that comment simply vanished in about 30 minutes. The comment was actually gaining "up votes", yet it, plus a critical response comment, were deep-sixed -- and it's gone. Wow! Here is my original comment:

/~~~~~~~~~~
http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2017-12-25/us-slashes-united-nations-budget-285-million-following-stunning-jerusalem-rebuke#comment-10899663

In the big picture, this is not about the UN. It's not even about Israel. Basically, the world just told the US to go to hell. This may mark the end of the Empire.

The US Empire expired on December 21, 2017. R.I.P.
\~~~~~~~~~~

This was in reference to an earlier ZH article:
--/ "A Stunning Rebuke": 128 Nations Support UN Call For Trump To Withdraw Jerusalem Decision

The full UN vote - which the US & Israel lost 128-9, with 35 brave abstentions - is here: pic.twitter.com/ZtrztqTgyK /--

So why was this so dreadful? Well, I "Googled" the date "December 21" and discovered:
--/ "[on December 21,] 1991 Soviet Union formally dissolves as 11 of 12 republics sign treaty forming Commonwealth of Independent States" /--

Coincidence?

#80. I think you overstate the importance of this. The UN General Assembly has a history of voting against the US and Israel in favor of Palestinians This was so clearly against international law I am almost surprised there were so many opposed/abstaining.

More important was the vote in the UNSC supporting more sanctions on North Korea. Russia and China voted in favor. It reminds me how the Soviet Union and Stalin allowed the UN war against North Korea by abstaining. This action if proven effective could lead to disaster for the region

If the US did not suffer the occasional setback in the international arena then people might see the truth , which is that they are under the rule of the US Trumpian Empire( in fact an Anglo-American- Israeli trinity) . With bases in almost every country and control of the worlds reserve currency and thus oil, satellite coverage everywhere, control of the internet, supremacy in the air and at sea, and a food supply matched by none and needed by many. Even those in China and Russia are subjects in part thanks to their oligarchs having sold them out. Independence is an illusion.

I am observing that reality becoming old history. China, Russia, Venezuela, and the BRICS countries are not trading gas and oil for dollars.
Actually Pepe Escobar covers it quite thoroughly here;

Escobar also covers the demise of SWIFT as the only currancy exchange trade system.
The times are changing and not slowly...

Thanks b you do such a great high quality job. I am concerned though that so many people in the west just don't care what happens so long as they can keep distracting themselves with technology. Yes it's a perpetual struggle in this world as good does not naturally predominate the order of things as it should.

Well... Solstice has past and the days are getting longer.

May the sunshine reach into dark and unseen areas for examination and disinfecting.

You need to take the meds your mental health care provider prescribed as instructed. When you skip a dose, things like that happen. If you are not already medicated, you definitely need to seek help.

Wishing a very merry Christmas/Nativity season to b and everyone whenever you celebrate this beautiful feast. We old calendarists shall be bringing up the rear - fear not, pagans, we're giving you plenty of room! ( Actually, though, so did the Romans back in the day.😁)
