Barfly Meeting - Second Call

As announced a month ago, some Moon of Alabama folks will meet in Hamburg, Germany on new years eve and throughout the following week.

We'll watch the fireworks over the harbour docks, we'll party and maybe tango here on January, 3rd and we'll roam Berlin on the 4th and 5th.

Anybody reading this is invited to join. Interesting people, lots of silly fun and decent drinks are guaranteed.

For local info/support please feel free to contact me at MoonofA - at - aol  - dot - com.

(Did anyone think of a slogan for this desaster yet?)

I am jaleous. Hamburg is where I was raised, Berlin is where I grew up. Just homesick.

i keep getting stuck on "harpies descend upon hamburg". i'm allowed - i'm one of them. :-)

"who's sharing the sleeping bag with the 14-year-old Viking?"

male or female?

crying like bears, howling like wolves

Posted by: remembereringgiap | Dec 3, 2006 8:50:50 PM | 10

I think it was a 14 year old and a Viking. Not saying who. My sleeping bag only fits one Viking. ;)

So anyway, I opt for Valkyries descend on Hamburg (with whiskey).

Half Moon Over Hamburg

citizen - that's it! sadly, it will not be the entire community so a symbolic half moon is perfect. i vote for Half Moon Over Hamburg.

Posted by: conchita | Dec 3, 2006 10:50:58 PM | 15

c'mon, Uncle $cam--how can you pass up the slumber party of the century?

I'm practicing Alabama Song and Tom Waits' Reeperbahn....

As for that symbolic 'alf-a-moon, we'll actually have quite the full orb at the beginning of the week.

I like Rowan's #3 and RG's #5.

perhaps we should consider that this will be our first annual...

let's pick a name that can continue, one that doesn't depend on hamburg.

i like

my suggestion is to continue this thread anonymously.

This chart shows some politician’s contribution to bloggers.

No 1. is - surprise! - a diarist on DKos, who received 115 000 dollars from Brown and
65 000 dollars from Warner.

Warner has been a terrific Governor for Virginia... and so on.

Not bad, heh, for writing rubbish? I think I’ll give up my first novel and find a ghostwriter in the US, anyone? ;) Get some money for the Second Moon Bash? :)

@Noirette - Armstrong, the MyDD blogger is a professional political consultant and the MyDD blog is related to Matt Stoller, a Dem - operative.
He did get the money to his job - which is consulting. This was disclosed and widly known - so why now care about it?

Posted by: b | Dec 4, 2006 6:47:02 AM | 21

@Noirette et al..

re:

$$$ for kind whores words...

Maybe yall kin git all retro, goe way back, old skool style and do a Soul Train Line at the Moon bash, and dedicate it to the whores of Dkos and other "progressive" blogs....lol

And b, as for why care now? Some in the blogshphere have no problem with it, with the one exception that there should be full disclosure. And they are certainly entitled to that opinion; I respect that, even as I disagree. However, I can't help but wonder if this doesn't fuel the naysayers and would be censors of the internet and further, give them ample amunition to scream and turn this into a blackeye for the blogsphere as a whole.

p.s. watch this blow up big time in the next few days...

My suggestions above were meant entirely tongue in cheek, to be humorous not serious. Sorry that did not come across... getting serious now, a question this thread raises for me is whether this gathering is meant to be a fun and sociable one, or a serious, "productive" one, ala the dKos convention.... the impression I get from Bernhard's description is that it is purely social, but some of these names sound more ambitious.

Assuming that it is meant primarily as a fun and sociable gathering loaded with opportunities for serious (but impromptu) discussions, how about:

(First Annual) Whiskey Barflies Retreat

(First Annual) Half Moon Meet

(First Annual) Whiskey Appreciation Society Sojourn

(First Annual) Alabama Song Society Convention

As for the other suggestions offered above, my only reservation is I'd personally rather not perpetuate the phrase "shock and awe" in any capacity... given its past associations. Not that we are not all awesome, but.... just sayin'.

Posted by: Bea | Dec 4, 2006 8:13:23 AM | 26

(First Annual) in parentheses above because I wasn't sure if it's been decided that this is a first annual event or not...

i've grateful for the clarification bea. i took your suggestion of Myriads of Moonies seriously. i think its important we stick to serious suggestions only. i know some people anticipate this gathering to be full of fun and games. my attendance will insure it is productive.

b, i think another thread focusing on dress code would be helpful.

No annie, it was the dress code.

Okay girls and boys! Here is your first mission. Dress optional.

No annie, it was the dress code.

i don't know whether to let that pass or be insulted. everyone knows how on topic i always am. plus, i plan on bringing my clipboard!

love the link. i actually had a dream about taking a tango class (no snark!)in preparation for one of our big nights out. i'm faily certain i can achieve that extended arm position, its the pesky footwork that may stump me.

Posted by: annie | Dec 5, 2006 11:10:59 AM | 36

faily? is that a word.

Annie--did you ever see The Tango Lesson, a somewhat self-indulgent but interesting film by Annie Potter? The main lesson is "walk." The guys have to lead. All you do is follow (backwards and in high heels, like Ginger Rogers). When he pauses, wrap your leg around his.

I took some tango classes a while back--but mostly in the German ballroom style, which isn't quite as much fun as the Argentinean style (sorry, b, but them gauchos invented the stuff). However, one of the leads in the class was this cute Swedish guy who basically gave the follows a ride on his right thigh. Feet had little to do with it...

Best tango recording in the last 10 years.

i loooved that movie catlady. today as i was rumaging thru my purse i found the notes i took from my friend about the tango classes. it wasn't a dream! honestly, i am so spaced out. i can walk and i can faily follow, maybe there is hope for me ;)

really comrade artist - what will happen in hamburg will not be so different from the 17th plenary congress of the communist party of albania under envar hoxha - we will speak fairly & generoulsy of agriculture, we shall cover patrimoine - we shall discuss the next five year plan & we will of course advance marxism-leninism -mao tse tung thought & we will construct from the archives from such fragments as these : -

who's the leader of the gang
made for you & me
m a o
t s e t u n g
mao tse tung (joseph stalin)
mao tse tung (joseph stalin)

so grab a gun
& come along
& smash the bourgeoisie

(to the tune of the mickey mouse musketeers)

or

i'm dreamin'
of a white riot
just like the one's i used to know
with the cop's à squealin'
& the people hurlin'

& other gems from the weathermen songbook

it will be austere & rigorous comrade artist - memories of zhadnov & i'm beginning to look a little like him & perhaps a little lysenko & just a touch of that old gangster molotov

& by the contingencie of fate - not so far from hamburg a theatre in copenhagen (i think as a part of a german studies conference on rosa leibknicht to ulrike meinhof) will be performing a text of mine - 'ulrike meinhof sings'

so all in all comrade
none of those bertoluccian baubles, ici

with the unforgettable tuli kupfebeg
