Moon of Alabama Brecht quote

Barfly Meeting - First Call

Some barflies, current Moon of Alabama and former Whiskey Bar commentators, have ganged up to descend on me in my current hometown of Hamburg, Germany on New Years eve and during the week following it. I have already preemptivly surrendered to that assault.

Those who didn't take part in that aggression now have a unique chance to join the coalition and will be rewarded with meeting some of the faces behind a few of the blog-handles here - (plus a great harbour tour - [the harbour that is - not the tour]).

If you think about coming, please let me know what day you would prefer for the central event. Inevitable wet/dry discussions about blog-sex, unjustified sarcasm and evil prejudice against marxism or whatever ideology you prefer to judge irrelevant or not: 12/31/06? 01/03/07? 01/06/07?

I'll somehow (though don't know how yet) figure out/decide on the best date for this and then will release a second call with a defined date.

If you are thinking about joining this baccanal, I may be able to help with some local accomodations and such. The relevant email address is available on the About page.

Hamburg you say? Thats not that far.

New years eve is on the other hand is a bit problematic, but I will see what I can do.

Posted by: a swedish kind of death | Nov 3, 2006 2:37:14 PM | 2

skod! You can smuggle me back to the homeland!

Posted by: beq | Nov 3, 2006 2:38:39 PM | 3

not that anyone should make plans based on me, but i have to leave on the 2nd, so my vote is for 12/31/06.

Posted by: conchita | Nov 3, 2006 2:45:50 PM | 4

I´ll smuggle you in a big trunk. Not to worry, there will be airholes. I have seen quite a few movies on how to smuggle people out of Germany...

Posted by: a swedish kind of death | Nov 3, 2006 2:46:42 PM | 5

Wait! ? beq's in Germany? I confused...

Posted by: Uncle $cam | Nov 3, 2006 2:48:46 PM | 6

#5 of course was my master plan to smuggle beq to the old country, not some clever way of postponing conchitas departure.

Posted by: a swedish kind of death | Nov 3, 2006 2:48:52 PM | 7

Too cool. How generous of you B to go to the trouble. Heart-warming.

for the mo I am supposed to go the US but..enuff said..for various reasons that may not happen. If it doesn’t I’ll come to Hamburg in 2 ticks if only for the one eve/night.

Posted by: Noirette | Nov 3, 2006 2:52:52 PM | 8

meaning on 30, 31 (06) or 1, 2 (07)

Posted by: Noirette | Nov 3, 2006 2:55:14 PM | 9

skod, maybe you should have two trunks waiting. not so sure i want to return to the "homeland".

Posted by: conchita | Nov 3, 2006 3:01:56 PM | 10

Posted by: annie | Nov 3, 2006 3:16:50 PM | 11

noirette, that is so cool, you must come if you can. some of us may try to get up to berlin also, b says it's a 90 minute train ride.

Posted by: annie | Nov 3, 2006 3:19:11 PM | 12

Anybody want the other half of my ticket? =) It's to, uh, Rio. [yeah, Rio]

Posted by: beq | Nov 3, 2006 3:21:22 PM | 13

I will see what I can do.

skod !!!

Posted by: annie | Nov 3, 2006 3:22:37 PM | 14

Actually, anyone who signs up is eligible for the bonus excursion to Syria (for two years).

Posted by: beq | Nov 3, 2006 3:24:54 PM | 15

To be in the same room w/ annie, beq, noirette, conchita, bea, fauxreal, Hannah and the rest of the barflies would be to embarrassing, cause I'd wet myself...lol

Posted by: Uncle $cam | Nov 3, 2006 3:29:39 PM | 16

Enjoy the New Year in Hamburg, my little bro' who was a merchant seaman before he made his millions loved the place.

Posted by: Fran | Nov 3, 2006 3:59:34 PM | 20

Fran too!? Now I will wet myself...lol

Posted by: Uncle $cam | Nov 3, 2006 4:04:05 PM | 21

i am coming of course with an expedition punitive to clear up a few ideological matters with my fists

i'll arrive in hamburg 31:12 & i'll stay for a week (it will take that long at least to exact the proper punishments)

fran & noirette - please you are less far than i

& uncle wherever you are - bring your people's militia - cloned is not so far - in england no

skod -i've been in stockholm on two new years eve/st sylvester - & it resembled olde beirut with people carrying their own portable missiles & launching them from the balconies

what do you risk in hamburg skod - perhaps high risk on open seas in a drunken ferry - or a meeting with querelle on the docks of hamburg

ô i wish our freundes americain would come with the feminist venceremos brigade led by powerbroker annie & the stevedores conchita beq fauxreal

if any of our american friends could be there it would be a real joy

Posted by: remembereringgiap | Nov 3, 2006 4:27:53 PM | 22

& it'd be like seeing the tears of fatima - if the likes of debs, antifa, deanander, slothrop could find themselves on our shores

any more & we could declare hambourg - - a soviet

Posted by: remembereringgiap | Nov 3, 2006 6:13:32 PM | 23

i'd love to, but will attend in spirit.

i recall when visiting hamburg's famous zoo a feeling of grief after seeing the exhibit of mountain lions trapped just outside my tiny home town.

free the panthers, comrades!

Posted by: slothrop | Nov 3, 2006 6:22:27 PM | 24

slothrop, i had a feeling a person who hadn't gotten in a car for 11 years (is it 12 yet?) might not make it to hamburg ;(

Posted by: annie | Nov 3, 2006 7:00:53 PM | 25

for anyone who would like the temptation offered by investigating airfares, i highly recommend www.kayak.com. you'd be surprised how reasonable this trip might be . . . go on, venture into the water, have a peek.

Posted by: conchita | Nov 3, 2006 7:23:02 PM | 26

sloth

just steal the vicechancellor/rector's - whatever you call them there - well appropriate his lear jet - i know ward can fly

Posted by: remembereringgiap | Nov 3, 2006 8:38:56 PM | 27

Screw you guys.

I'm wintering in Honduras.

Sweet!

Hamburg's cold in December.

Posted by: Eric | Nov 3, 2006 10:02:57 PM | 28

Sorry, cannot attend. That entire week is booked for tunneling into the Senate basement.

To establish a new American holiday . . .

Thanks for the kayak.com rec conchita.

But we've just agreed to introduce the new one to his overseas family, so I'll be in Japan. It sounds lovely, and my heart is breaking a little to miss out on such a fine motley crew.

I checked out the prices for a multicity flight - Yikes! Do not fly from Japan anytime close to the new year.

Posted by: citizen | Nov 3, 2006 11:46:16 PM | 30

(This needs to be said)

b, you're the mensch.

Posted by: citizen | Nov 3, 2006 11:47:38 PM | 31

Deanander

I know you hate the idea of sitting in a tube that consumes all the energy a large windmill produces in a whole year but it would be wonderful if you could make it too.

Maybe you can hoist the sails and come over on your boat. I can see us all welcoming you as you sail up the Elbe into the port at Hamburg.

Posted by: dan of steele | Nov 4, 2006 4:09:25 AM | 32

Boy, am I jealous about all this. I can barely get to work, let alone Hamburg.

Posted by: anna missed | Nov 4, 2006 4:46:00 AM | 33

To establish a new American holiday . . .

one to rival the 4th i presume

Posted by: annie | Nov 4, 2006 5:30:52 AM | 34

Breaks my heart, but my work schedule isn't going to allow for it. I won't be seeing any free time for travel until around the first of March.

I'll be toasting you from afar.

Posted by: Monolycus | Nov 4, 2006 5:31:13 AM | 35

@ annie #34: Remember, remember, the 4th of January? [maybe not]

Posted by: beq | Nov 4, 2006 7:13:53 AM | 36

Hey! When did this get launched? I live here and have a guest room. OK, yes, it's in the basement, but we have a NICE basement!

Posted by: Hamburger | Nov 4, 2006 8:19:09 AM | 37

What a New Year blast off. Wish I could attend. Perhaps I'll be there imaged on inkjet paper, eh conchita. My thoughts and good wishes to all.

Posted by: Juannie | Nov 4, 2006 9:12:57 AM | 38

yo Billman,

if you are reading this thread, let me extend an invitation to you as well. After all it is your fault that this blog was born.

surely your company needs to do some investigative reporting on the Hansastadt business model.

To establish a new American holiday . . .

I read this as one to rival the 5th (of November)

Posted by: DM | Nov 4, 2006 9:31:20 AM | 40

Ah...it now looks like I will go to the US on 22 Dec, I will accompany someone who cannot travel alone, family reunion, that kind of thing. But who knows, between 22 and 31 dec ... I just chatted with my son (21) about this and he said, Noir, other people can take care of things...but it doesn’t look good...the dates are too tight...

Anyway, while I’m up, anyone who passes by here or wants to visit (Geneva), don’t hesitate to contact me, I have a guest room, guide books, beer or whatever in the fridge, chinese soup or fondue on the table, a big grin ... Open house.

yup!

Posted by: Noirette | Nov 4, 2006 9:37:44 AM | 41

I plan to bake a stalinist fruitcake for dessert on New Year's Eve, but b and conchita will have to do the rest.

I really don't know what b was thinking of when he agreed to this (or what the instigator(s) were thinking.) After we leave, we'll need some European MoA-ers to check in and see if b still has that glazed look in his eyes and flinches whenever someone says his name.

but, dammit, this means you'll all find out that I'm really a 13 year old boy. LOL

Posted by: fauxreal | Nov 4, 2006 5:25:50 PM | 42

That entire week is booked for tunneling into the Senate basement.

i was thinking more of a new birth for our nation.

july! of course.

Posted by: annie | Nov 4, 2006 5:35:39 PM | 43

what other american holiday do we have on a 4th??

Posted by: annie | Nov 4, 2006 5:37:48 PM | 44

...and I'm a lusty viking.

Posted by: beq | Nov 4, 2006 5:39:22 PM | 45

to faux's 13 yr. old boy.

Posted by: beq | Nov 4, 2006 5:40:14 PM | 46

geez, beq, forget what I said about sharing a sleeping bag... :)

Posted by: fauxreal | Nov 4, 2006 5:42:55 PM | 47

:P
waited too long to hit post and lost the context.

Posted by: beq | Nov 4, 2006 5:53:42 PM | 48

wha??? the 4th, a lusty viking, faux's son, now i might get to share my bag w/beq?

i may be the dullest in the crowd cuz i'm completely lost.

Posted by: annie | Nov 4, 2006 7:48:13 PM | 49

Don't you just love the internets annie?

[hopelessly hetero btw][faux too]

Posted by: beq | Nov 4, 2006 8:12:28 PM | 50

[hopelessly hetero btw][faux too]

did i make you nervous? o beq tell me it isn't so..

Posted by: annie | Nov 4, 2006 8:19:06 PM | 51

Funny, what the words "lusty viking" invoke. Add sleeping bag. I faint.
=)

Posted by: beq | Nov 4, 2006 8:38:01 PM | 52

hmmm, I might be able to swing this (thank goddess for academic schedules). i'm voting for either of the january dates.

Uncle $--don't forget your towel.

Posted by: catlady | Nov 4, 2006 8:58:06 PM | 53

annie- I said in real life I was really a 13 y/o boy. beq said in real life she was a lusty viking (in reply to my joke about being a 13 y/o boy. Cause we both really know I am the Nessie Monster.)

but then beq saw that you had posted in between so she added the next message to say that she was a lusty viking like I was a 13 y.o boy, but she said "to" instead, so... I took that and ran with it over to my sleeping bag...

b/c, if we're going to have, say, a cast of thousands sleeping at b's place...nevermind. you knew what we meant anyway, didn't you?

Posted by: fauxreal | Nov 4, 2006 9:31:58 PM | 54

way cool, catlady. hope you'll get there before i leave on the 2nd so that i get to meet you.

Posted by: conchita | Nov 4, 2006 9:38:15 PM | 55

i am convinced this will be a special moment for our community & hope that hamburg will create even more dynamic convergences

Posted by: r'giap | Nov 4, 2006 9:41:32 PM | 56

also, fran, wanted to say, i hope temptation wins. same for skod, dan of steele, hamburger, and ralphieboy who are all nearly there.

Posted by: conchita | Nov 4, 2006 9:42:41 PM | 57

Yeah. Here's to special moments.

Go catlady! I mean, Come! Fran too. [nevermind]

I wish I was mature, like fauxreal. I think it's last call for me.
